Didn't Western Hills get that? Or was theirs just a different district request due to geography?

 

They were in 3A and remained in 3A, but requested a geographic change. Apparently Frankfort is closer to Estill County, Powell County and Bath County than it is to Henry County and Louisville. Of course District 5 is a long way from District 3 (and Louisville Central), which is probably all Western Hills wanted in the first place!

Gotcha...I remember them and several other petitioned a change due to geography (or teams they didn't want to play), but couldn't recall if it was district or classification. Thanks!

I guess my question is if not for geography purposes, what reasons do teams play up? I've seen it suggested that some would play up in order to challenge themselves more. Name one, because for the life of me I can't think of a team that has done that. I know Highlands and CovCath played up together for years because there wasn't enough of a NKY presence in their class, but now that there is, they moved to 4A.

 

I've mentioned it before, but the requests to play up (or down) tend to have one reason for doing so other than truly being for geography - competitive advantage to get the heck away from a team or teams. LexCath, Boyle County, and Johnson Central all saw a soft spot in 5A that would probably have had any one of them playing for a state title every year these last three years and not in the thresher with Highlands.

I could see some of the 1A schools requesting to play up as high as 3A (Frankfort could do well and get away from Mayfield) Caldwell could bump up in 3A west and make a crazy run. Glasgow could also benefit from playing 3A west football. Some 3A schools would do well in 4A west until semis when they hit Collins (PT-Monroe-Wayne). Im just saying that with 6 classes many schools can play the "if we go this class, our route to the semis or title is easier) in 4 classes, I just don't think that was the case.
