Inside the 14th Region (12/8/13)

Featured Replies

Basketball season is here and let's take a recap of week 1 (December 1-8). Even with all the bad weather that hit Kentucky, games were still getting played.

See those Patriots Shoot:

Knott County Central opened the 2013/14 basketball season, looking to defend their throne as the king of the 14th region and what better way to get it started by picking up two convincing wins. The Patriots opened the season on December 3rd at home against district and region opponent, Jenkins, Patriots didn’t have any trouble at all with this one as they rolled to a 93-25 win. Tennessee commit Camron Justice scored 27 points in the win.

Knott County Central returned to action Saturday December 7th at home hosting a much better opponent in Magoffin County but Magoffin County still wasn’t enough to upset the Patriots as the Patriots would roll to a 30-point victory 85-55 win.

Hear those Lions Roar:

Cordia re-loaded this summer, looking to knockoff the king of the 14th region, Knott County Central. Cordia got off to a good start, defeating Buckhorn 56-52 on December 5th and then defeated the always tough, Lexington Catholic Knights 74-71 in overtime.

Hear that Bulldog Chomp:

Another talented 14th region team looking to knockoff Knott County Central and end their reign as king of the mountains, got off to a very good start this past week, getting 3 overwhelming wins. Estill County welcomed Hazard into Irvine on December 3rd as the Engineers looked to upset the Bulldogs but it wasn’t meant to be as Hazard would roll to a 30 point win, 71-41 over the Engineers.

Hazard would go on to defeat Owsley County convincingly 77-32 on December 54th.

Hazard would turn around and play Pikeville on Saturday..Hazard would win that game 54-36 over the Panthers.

Perry County Central off to a 3-0 Start:

Much like Hazard, Perry County Central are also off to a 3-0 start. Perry County Central would open the season on December 3rd and pick up a region win over visiting Breathitt County 74-52.

Perry County Central would participate in the PRTC Classic at Jackson County where they faced off against Knox Central. Knox Central kept it close but wasn’t able to pull it off as Perry County Central would win 72-62.

Perry County Central would return home the very next night after defeating Knox Central, to face off against another region opponent in Powell County. Perry County Central didn’t have much of a problem here as the Commodores rolled to a 20-point win, 82-62 over the Pirates.

Players of the Week:

Braxton Beverly (Perry Co. Central): 33 points, 5 boards and 3 assist in Perry Central’s win over Knox Central.

Justin Johnson (Perry Co. Central): 23 points and 25 boards in Perry Central’s win over Knox Central.

Camron Justice (Knott Co. Central) 27 points in Knott Co. Central’s win over Jenkins.

Chris Hudson (Hazard): 26 points in win over Estill Co., 22 points in win over Owsley Co., 14 points in win over Pikeville.

Biggest surprises:

Lee County (0-4): 3 of the 4 losses have been blown-out losses. Figured they would have had at least one win by now.

Owsley County (0-2): two games and two blown-out losses. Several starters out.

Letcher County Central (1-2): lost to Harlan County by 4, beat Jackson City by 10.

Games to Watch:

December 10th:

Knott County Central at Cordia – district matchup between the king of the mountains and a heavy hitter.

Wolfe County at Estill County – Rematch from last year’s first round region matchup.

December 13th:

Hazard at Perry County Central – biggest rivalry in the mountains.

14th Region Rankings:

1. Knott County Central (2-0)

2. Hazard (3-0)

3. Perry County Central (3-0)

4. Cordia (2-0)

5. Letcher County Central (1-2)

6. Wolfe County (1-0)

7. Buckhorn (1-2)

8. Breathitt County (0-1)

9. Estill County (1-2)

10. Leslie County (2-0)

Love any 14th region news, keep up the good work as much as possible

Is Hazard really better than Perry Co?

I saw them at the Fast Lane Classic and while the Hudson kid impressed me, the rest of their team really didn't.

^ Hazard demolished everyone they played...Perry won their three games by right around 20 or less. That's the reason I put Hazard above Perry. This Friday can't get here soon enough. Hazard vs. Perry....What a showdown that's gonna be

Buckhorn (1-1) not 1-2

Hazard over Perry Central? I dont understand that one. PCC is arguably the best in the region. Other than that one, looks fair to me.

Typo on my part..

I went by the way Hazard has destroyed opponents to Perry's 20 point margins...Hazard has two games where they won by 30+ points...I'm sure they'll change up this week.

If Hazard is the 2nd best team in the region, no way PCC is top 10.

All State, do you have any info on the 3 eastern European players that have enrolled at Hazard? I hear one if them from Serbia is 6'8 and is a good ball player. If they become eligible they could definitely make the Bulldogs a stronger candidate to win the region.

That I do not. I thought the ruling on Joey Grove was gonna be today (Tuesday) but instead the Hazard players and Hines at Cordia was ruled today from what I was told. I'll try and get more info on that.
