Final from Augusta

Brent Bach pours in 30 points on the night. Sophomore Connor Maddox adds 19 points.

Andrew Sticklen has 25 points of his own for the Saints.

Regardless of the lack of competition tonight, I expect big things out of Augusta this year. Hopefully they can make some noise in the 10th region tournament.

Augusta looked decent for a first game. Bach played pretty well, except for the free throw line where he uncharacteristically struggled. 29 points is what I was told he had & I'm guessing 8-10 rebounds. Made some nice passes as well. Solid all around game for him.

Connor Maddox picked up right where he left off last year. He hit about 4 or 5 from beyond the arc. I'm not certain you'll find a better spot-up 3-point shooter in the 10th Region than Maddox.

Those two guys were the highlights for Augusta. Really hated to see Owens Crawford go down with an ugly injury in the 2nd quarter. He didn't come back in the game & needed a great deal of assistance getting off the floor. Looked like a serious knee injury from my vantage point.

Andrew Sticklen looked really good for St. Pat. He accounted for almost half the team's points, scoring 25 of the Saints' 53. He's a skilled, lanky big man who has a high ceiling. Aside from Sticklen, the Saints don't have a great deal of talent. They make up for the lack of talent, though, with physicality & effort. They play really hard & really attack the offensive glass.

Augusta popcorn gets a 6 out of 10 ranking. First bag was partially burned. Second bag was much better.

Augusta WiFi gets a Negative Eleventy Billion out of 10 ranking. Disappointed I couldn't do my first update thread of the year.

Question is, did he hit any 3's from Carotas or such? :lol2:

Actually, Augusta got the tip & Bach hit his first shot of the night within the first 15 seconds. Probably a 23-footer that started the scoring.

I think he's bulked up some and seems faster. Had a nice steal & breakaway dunk in the 1st half.

Friend jokingly asked me today how many points would be scored in this game. I replied 127. 73+53=126.:lol:

The word on Crawford is out 6 to 8 weeks ,broken bone in ankle.

I'll be honest...I thought he was done for the year the way it looked to me. I hate that he has to miss time, but I'm glad it's not season-ending. Good young player.

Both teams left a bunch of points at the charity stripe.

Chuck Hamilton's article linked above highlights the areas where both of these teams will struggle. Size, rebounding, interior defense for Augusta. With St. Pat I think it's turnovers & guard play.

Of course, we're only one game into the season.

Glad to see Sticklen have a big game. I'm a fan!

It wasn't "pretty" by any means but as said earlier, it's the first game of the year. I was encouraged by our significant crowd and the fact that our fans (Augusta's) thought a 20 point victory wasn't good enough...........the bar keeps getting higher for our "little" school. Owen's injury is a major concern for us going forward though since it exacerbates one of our two primary weaknesses (lack of bench strength).

Maybe St. Pat is open to a merger and that'll fix things for both "little school" teams.........lol

Very good crowd last night--one that included a number of coaches from throughout the 10th. I have a feeling that The Panthers Den will be packed just about every home game.

Couldn't agree more about Crawford's injury. Really hope he can recover fully & quickly.
