The whole "We want Bama" campaign hasn't gone to well...

Spencer: "Oh, yeah. I got to. I got to sit on my couch and just watch other college teams and then, yesterday, watched all the pro teams. It's a good, relaxing few days."

 

Reporter: Obviously, you watched Alabama and LSU. Your thoughts on that.

 

Spencer: "I mean, both teams are really good. LSU seemed to have some momentum at the beginning in being able to move the ball up and down the field. But Alabama, they're one of the best technical teams in the country. So they kinda broke them down a little bit. But I saw holes in both teams and strengths in both teams."

 

Reporter: Does it happen when you're watching a game, envision how Ohio State would play against Alabama or what you might do against them?

 

Spencer: "Oh, yeah. Really since like midway through high school, every time I watch somebody else play, I always think about what I could have done there or what we would have done there as an offense or what we would have done there as a defense or what have you. It's good to look at other competition and kind of mentally play a game while you're sitting on the couch."

 

Reporter: So you did watch the Alabama game, and the Oklahoma-Baylor game and Stanford-Oregon. How do you think you guys would do against those teams.

 

Spencer: "I guess I'm a little biased, but I think we'd, uh, we'd wipe the field with both of them. But that's just my bias speaking." (laughs)

 

Reporter: That's Alabama and who's the other team?

 

Spencer: "Whoever. Whoever."

 

Reporter: How much do you follow this, rooting for Stanford or rooting for an LSU?

 

Spencer: "I was the biggest Cardinal fan for 3 hours because we needed a little bit of help but at the same time we still have to take care of our business. We have to go out there and show them that we're one of the best offenses in the country, one of the best defenses in the country, and one of the best kicking games in the country. We know we have to go out there and take care of business that we have to handle, but we also know we need a little bit of help as well."

I'm very glad you posted this and the full interview. It wasn't a big deal to me in the first place, but I think just what you posted puts the whole thing in perspective. This was a college kid who had a weekend off and watched college and pro football like the rest of us for a change. I thought he came across as a very smart, engaging, thoughtful kid, who said what ends up being the spotlighted item with a laugh (and admitted bias).

 

What's wrong with that?

 

I'm not shocked at all that part of the interview was cherry picked. I think it's a shame, but it's not at all surprising anymore.

 

I'm not an OSU fan, but don't dislike them either. The full interview won them some points with me. In all honesty, the kid came across as someone I could root for.

Urban has banned Spencer from media conversations.

Really easy to talk crap about a team you will never play

'Them' in Spencer's quote is, of course, Alabama and Florida State, two teams that are ranked above the Buckeyes.

 

If I'm Spencer, I'd be careful what I wished for, as OSU Coach Urban Meyer himself voted his team #2, which was no doubt a motivational tactic. I don't really have as much of a problem with Spencer's comment as others will, as I would rather hear that and know someone has their sights set on being the best and wants to compete to prove it. I just think he may be jumping the gun a bit, as Alabama and Florida State look like two well-oiled machines right now. I think the talent level between those teams is deeper than what Ohio State is working with right now as well.

How do you deal with this if you are Urban Meyer?

 

If you are an OSU fan, do you like this or feel it is a distraction and/or bulletin board material that will only motivate the other teams?

 

As for the questions........

1. Disagree, Was definitely not the statement that I would prefer. I fully realize that the kid has confidence and is a competitor so one wouldn't expect him to say that OSU wouldn't have a chance, any real competitor believes they can beat anyone.

I admire Spencers confidence and "swagger" but there are definitely different way to say it without making the statement that he did, how he said was the wrong way, very wrong way. :no:

2. I know that Meyer is plenty "P'd" about it, in an article in the OSU Football / bleacher report, Meyer stated "he won't be talking to the media anytime soon". That's probably about what I would do. Spencer put out several tweets saying things like "I respect them" "I didn't mean any disrespect", etc.. Yeah, right :lol2: , I am an OSU Football fan and I know those were weak. Keeping him away from any media is probably the correct thing, plus maybe some pr classes.

3. I don't see it as a distraction. Should OSU some how get in the NC game or any other game with either the Fisher and Saban most definitely have bulletin board material.

 

So, Spencer said it, no doubt shouldn't have but it is not the end of the world, correct it and go on.
