What players in middle school will have the greatest impact on varsity teams this season? I can think of 2 that play for Scott High that play major roles on their teams. Who else?

Boone Co schools won't allow MS to play up but I believe both Beechwood & Highlands have strong MS that will be part of Varsity but not sure how strong??

Just read in another thread that Conner and Cooper both have had or are having MS playing up so that rule seems to be evolving.

I thought there was a KHSAA rule that a middle school student is not allowed to play varsity football.

 

No middle schoolers play varsity football at Beechwood. Beechwood will allow freshmen to dress varsity after their freshman season is done but very rarely do they ever allow a freshman to dress varsity while the freshman season is still going on.

Thank you p-man! Been reading football threads all night and I was on a roll.

 

That changes my comments. Beechwood girls basketball does play young players. Last year's team had several young players that were key players on the team.

Highlands for the first time ever this year has implemented an internal rule that no middle schoolers may play up on high school teams unless grandfathered in.

I forgot that Conner had 2 play up a couple years ago!! Its a situation that will always be controversial whether the rule is strictly enforced or not. If a MS athlete is talented enough to make Varsity & have substantial playing time then I think its fine but if they will just sit on the bench, not worth it in my book. Schools get around the rule by not giving the MS a Varsity letter so they are eligible the whole 4 yrs of high school. It is a rule that can easily be manipulated so pointless IMO!!!

There is no KHSAA rule in basketball for how many years a kid can play on varsity. You regularly have ms girls at small schools play varsity for 6 years. The rule actually is that they only have 4 years after they enter high school. The new ms rules apply to next years 6th graders and the grades behind them playing up on the high school level. If they are not on a freshman high school roster this year "grandfathering" them in then they will not be able to participate in 2014-15. For most this is not a problem but for the small schools, it can be. I disagree with the sitting on the bench and not getting anything out of it, for I would expect that they are getting to practice everyday with the older girls.

This is just another attempt to lay a blanket over ALL for the FEW that need to be covered.

I wouldn't say that "Highlands" implemented this rule. I will say that a principal at the MS is not allowing his MS kids to play up.

 

At Highlands, the HS program needs MS kids for the HS program to thrive, so obviously I don't agree with this at all. But I'll keep my opinion off here.

My daughtered "lettered" in 7th and 8th grade. Not sure the letter has anything to do with eligibility. If so, she's a sophomore and this will be her last year!!! I better start calling some colleges!!!

I believe the new KHSAA rule is misinterpreted here. Starting in 2014-15 season anyone younger than 7th grade may not play varsity sports in any sport. I still believe a 7th or 8th grader can play without being grandfathered in. Does someone know for a fact what the rule actually is?

What business is it of the MS principal. If the players parents want it, and the player wants it, and the Head Coach wants it, what say does some selfish MS Principal have in the decision making process. He is probably interested in winning MS championships or some other none sense. If a 7th grader at HMS was ready for HS mathematics would he hold her back?? This is total Oscar Mayer Bologna!!! I also find it ironic that this is happening at Highlands when their coach is the poster child for the benefits of moving someone up when they have the talent.
