October 16, 201312 yr I guarantee you that you will collect social security ... now, how long you will have to live to start collecting, that is the better question. I agree 100% on saving as much as possible in a 401k or other retirement plan. Anyone who considers Social Security as their retirement plan has a much different vision of retirement than I do. Isn't this somewhat of an acknowledgment that the SS system isn't working; or isn't working to the extent it was expected to work? Seems so to me. The creation of the SS system was a big step towards the creation of the "nanny state". In the simplest of terms, it said in essence: "you aren't smart enough or disciplined enough to save for your retirement so we, the federal govt, are going to force you to do it. And we are going to force you to do it with us!" Unfortunately, like most Ponzi schemes, it fails to work as promised. Just think what your 401K would look like if you had been able to put all the money you contributed to SS into your 401K. As Martha says, that would be a good thing. If the justification for Obamacare is the "success" of SS, we have a problem.
October 17, 201312 yr Caved in again. This is going to cycle and cycle until the Republican Party can have a united party. As a Democrat, I will say that a united Republican Party would be what is best for the country. It is difficult to negitiate within your own caucus and then have to take on the other party. Now I believe the Democratic Party is thrilled with the divisiveness but we as citizens should not be. Compromise and balance is much easier when there are two involved rather than three. Independents that swing some elections have a real hard time understanding and supporting those that in fight, when in reality they would support rational compromising behavior.
