Inside Western Kentucky Football: September 18

Border Whipping

Caldwell County and Trigg County have the second-longest continuous series in western Kentucky, and Caldwell claimed the latest round with a convincing 49-13 win over Trigg.

As a result, Caldwell County took home the inaugural 139 Bowl trophy.

Caldwell County racked up 404 yards of offense and 19 first downs – just in the first half.

Junior quarterback Elijah Sindelar was 18-of-25 passing for 318 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for a pair of scores as Caldwell County built a 42-7 halftime lead.

Junior Jaylen Boyd rushed for 133 yards on 16 carries and caught three passes for 63 yards, including a score.

On defense, the Tigers held Trigg County’s Jayven Jones, who rushed for 283 yards the previous week against Hopkinsville, to just six yards on seven carries.

Caldwell County, 4-0 for the first time since 1991, finished with 488 yards and limited Trigg County to 201 yards.

Trigg County had previously won eight of 11 vs. Caldwell in the series.

Bombs Away

Ballard Memorial is off to their best start in a dozen years after a 64-27 thrashing of Webster County. Alek Hugen rushed for 154 yards and four touchdowns as the Bombers rolled up 386 yards of offense.

Cash Owsley ran for 106 yards on just four carries in addition to returning both a punt and kickoff for a touchdown.

While Ballard Memorial is 4-0, keep in mind their opponents are just 4-10 and they play a winless Hopkins County Central team this week. We’ll get a look at whether the Bombers are for real in the coming weeks when they play Caldwell County and Murray after Friday’s game.

A Falcon First

Fort Campbell got their first-ever win over Christian County Friday by hammering the Colonels 49-13 on post.

Junior quarterback Jalen Williams was 10-of-20 passing for 253 yards and four touchdowns – three of those scores to Jonathon Jethroe. Isaiah Washington returned a fumble 97 yards for a score for the Falcons, who have won two straight after losing to Class 1A powers Mayfield and Russellville.

Tornado left feeling Blue

Graves County rallied from a 17-0 deficit to shock Paducah Tilghman 30-27 in overtime. Peyton Puckett hit Joey Marshall on an 80-yard scoring pass with 3:44 left, and Evan McCombs booted the game-winning field goal in overtime to secure the win for the Eagles.

Puckett finished 20-of-36 passing for 221 yards and four touchdowns.

Tre Coleman ran for 161 yards on 18 carries for Tilghman, who has dropped three straight after edging McCracken County in the season opener.

Role Reversal

Hopkinsville had scored 76-percent of their points in the second half of their first three games of the season, only to watch Madisonville score three fourth quarter touchdowns in a 45-17 win.

Ivonta White (133 yards, 2 TDs) and Jaron White (157 yards) both topped the century mark rushing for Madisonville, who also got a pick-six from Dayshawn Jones.

House of Cards

When Murray jumped out to an 18-0 lead over Mayfield, it looked like the Tigers were on track to beat the Cardinals for the first time since 1997. But Deion Jackson returned a kickoff for a score and later added a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown as the Cardinals scored 28 straight points to stay unbeaten. Jackson also caught seven passes for 88 yards.

Mayfield extended the state’s second-longest winning streak to 18 games.

Quarterback Comparison

(Through Four Games)

Luke Guhy (Mayfield) – 61-of-93, 858 yards, 8 TDs, 3 INT, 14 rushes, (-37) yards

Elijah Sindelar (Caldwell County) – 60-of-92, 844 yards, 12 TDs, 2 INT, 16 rushes, 106 yards, 3 TD

Zyaire Hughes (McCracken County) – 60-of-98, 894 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs, 40 rushes, 121 yards, 4 TDs

Five Games to Watch

Fort Campbell at Caldwell County – If you are expecting this one to be a 7-6 contest, you might want to look elsewhere Friday. Expect both teams to put big play touchdowns on the scoreboard, however, Caldwell County should have the advantage in the trenches. Fort Campbell has won five of the last six meetings with Caldwell and leads the all-time series 17-10.

PREDICTION – Caldwell County 49 Fort Campbell 21

Henderson County at Madisonville – The Maroons have struggled with bigger teams in recent years, but may have the firepower to beat Henderson County. The Colonels saw their three-game winning streak end with a shutout loss to Covington Catholic last week. Henderson County leads the all-time series 25-22-1 which dates back to 1955.

PREDICTION – Henderson County 17 Madisonville 13

Graves County at Mayfield – This annual series has gotten more heated in recent years with the rise of consistency of the Eagles’ program. Head coach Lance Gregory is looking for his first win over Mayfield in five meetings. Mayfield leads the all-time series 15-5.

PREDICTION – Mayfield 31 Graves County 14

Hopkinsville at Warren East – Both teams need a win in this one, with Hopkinsville needing to get their defense on track after giving up 86 points the last two games. They’ll face a Warren East team that has scored 82 points in their two wins.

PREDICTION – Hopkinsville 38 Warren East 34

Union County at Trigg County – This was the best of the rest in western Kentucky. It’s the first time in 17 years these schools have played, with Trigg winning four of the last five. A week after giving up 404 first half yards to Caldwell County, the Wildcats must find a way to stop Union County, who had 317 yards in a running clock win over Crittenden County

PREDICTION – Trigg County 34 Union County 28

Last Week: 4-1 (only missed Christian County over Fort Campbell)

Season: 16-4

Good job, Scribe. I look forward to your post each week.

I agree Scribe, great stuff every week!

Very good read, scribe, and I am still looking for that blonde from the Caldwell-Trigg game for you, bro@

I appreciate it. I thought I knew most of the attractive Caldwell moms or sisters but she was a new one on me.

It's uncanny how close the passing numbers are for Sindelar and Guhy.

The difference is that Sindelar can run behind his o-line but honestly, I believe any of us here could gain positive yards with those young men blocking.

Both are great but Guhy is the man in these parts

I wouldn't have Marshall ahead of Calloway. Calloway just beat them 19-3

Enjoy the thread each week, but I seriously don't think mayfield will beat graves co by 17, they will have their hands full just to win, period.

Great article each week, but not sure why you continue to ignore Puckett from Graves. So here you go:

Peyton Puckett (Graves) - 51 of 79, 894 yards, 9 TDs, 3 INT, 10 rushes, (48) yards and 1 rushing TD (*through 3 games)

Luke Guhy (Mayfield) – 61-of-93, 858 yards, 8 TDs, 3 INT, 14 rushes, (-37) yards

Elijah Sindelar (Caldwell County) – 60-of-92, 844 yards, 12 TDs, 2 INT, 16 rushes, 106 yards, 3 TD

Relax, I'm sure it was just an oversight, great numbers for Puckett

Call me picky but Graves County had not reported their stats when I was writing the article. There's a good chance he will be included next week...so long as his stats are reported on the KHSAA site
