Wisconsin QB sets the ball down instead of spiking it which caused the clock to continue to run with under 10 seconds left But the Arizona St. Player jumped on the ball and laid on it for about 5 seconds or more all while the official kept asking him to get off of it. Should have been a delay of game penalty on the Sun Devils. Wisconsin fails to snap the ball and game over No one to fault but the QB for placing the ball on the field instead of spiking it and I'm sure he may be embarrassed for harassing the officials once he seen the replay.

You're joking right? If the QB made a mistake, it was in not turning around and flipping the ball to an official or handing it straight to him. He wasn't trying to spike the ball to stop the clock, he was trying to center it for the game winning FG. Hence he took a knee, set the ball down on the ground. At that point there was 13-14 seconds still on the clock. More than enough time for the official to spot the ball, Wisconsin to get set, snap it, spike it, stop the clock, run the FG team on. MORE than enough time. Setting the ball down was a contributing factor, for sure. But in reality the QB didn't do anything truly wrong. He kneed the ball down and set the ball on the ground. It is not his fault the ASU player then jumped on it for what should have been a delay of game. Not his fault the official did a poor job of enforcing that or getting the ball set. And ESPECIALLY not his fault that once the official finally spotted the ball that the official held up his hand to prevent them from snapping the ball for a couple more crucial seconds. In no universe should a snap and quick kneel down with 18 seconds left in the game should the clock expire. None.

Now indefinitely agree that Wisconsin was ultimately cheated but they shouldn't have been in that position anyway. No excuse for that. I believe he's motioning that he was down. He is pointing to the ground with his index finger, not motioning that he spiked it. And if he had spiked it, well then he wouldn't have gotten the result that was the only reason they were running the play, which was to center the ball. They didn't want to spike it because the clock was already stopped. And if he spiked it after kneeing on it, that's probably a penalty ala spiking the ball after a TD. I maintain that if the QB made any "mistake" it's that he didn't toss the ball to an official. He figured he'd place it in the spot he kneed down so that the official could pick it up, set it, and that's that. I find it mind boggling that you place the lion's share of the blame on a player that made a legal play and gave the ball up for the officials to spot. They are culpable, not him.

September 15, 201313 yr Author I will have to watch the replay again I suppose. Maybe I missed something but it looked like he was trying to motion that he spiked it. I'm not saying the QB made an illegal play but it just wasn't smart IMO. Too many things can happen. That close of a field goal the ball spot shouldn't matter (although when it can be set up most want to do it). The biggest part goes the officials for allowing the Arizona St. Player to just lay on the ball for about 7 seconds. No excuse for that at all.
September 15, 201313 yr Author I do take back that he was motioning as if he spiked it. It appears otherwise. But with time still going after he placed the ball he shouldn't have been talking the the officials. The whole team seemed too laid back instead of in hurry up mode.
September 15, 201313 yr IMO where the officials failed is that they didn't place the ball for 11 seconds. Whistle blows at 0:15. Ball placed with 0:04 left.
