Two of the top coaches in the State retired last year in Stacey Pendleton (Manual) and Mark Evans (Mercy). That being said how can you keep Hall of Famer Donna Moir off of the list?

I'm going to add one that I think is really rising up and that's Coach Holly Roberts-Howell at Gallatin County. Her kids aren't very big, but she gets the absolute most out of her players. Made it to the 8th Region Tournament for a few years in a row now. Having a few standout players like the Dossett sisters doesn't hurt either.

People hear that she's this or that but I can say from personal experience she's as fiery as some of the rumors you hear that being said I wouldn't want any other coach besides her shaping my daughter's life or basketball career . Well maybe besides Stowers @ SK he's one hell of a coach who's team should be really good this yr.

 

 

There is no way I could put Coach Fookes on this list. Please understand, I mean no disrespect to her. Sure, she is a great coach as far as wins and losses, getting as much as possible out of her teams and whatever else someone else might add. I will give her that. The reason I could not put her on a top five in the state list is simply because being in the top five for me requires more than just great coaching with wins and success. If it is the top five in the state, it is not easy to get into. There would be very, very high standards and several criterion. Although Coach Fookes would pass easily on many of my criterion, she would not pass them all. Having heard the way she talks/cusses to girls on the bench would disqualify her. In my opinion she doesn't honor herself or her players dropping f bombs in their face. Someone might say, what is the big deal? The girls are going to talk that way anyway. They are going to hear it in music, movies and in the hallway. Well your right, HOWEVER, that is never an excuse for the coach to talk that way also. If the coach is going to talk like everyone else, then that would make the coach normal and average. Normal and average do not make top five list. I would only put great coaches, with many wins and successes and those that look to show their players a way that is above and better than what everyone else is doing. This not only means the way you practice and play, but it begins with how you talk and how you carry yourself.

 

Its just my opinion...Coach Fookes may be top five in just wins, but she is not in an elite top five class when it comes to showing young ladies a higher and better way than what everyone else does. In that, she is just like most everyone else. Therefore she may be a good candidate in one area, but for my top five, that is not enough. She can be a great coach, but unfortunately it ends with wins and losses.

It's hard to argue with 20+ wins for 27 straight years. No state titles, but a boatload of dist/region titles. Is she tough, dang right! Absolutely no way my Daughter would've been mentally prepared for the D1 level as a freshman without Nell's tough love. I watched recruit after recruit quit because they were not mentally prepared for the rigors of playing D1 and the in your face coaching using language that would make Nell blush.

 

Bigmike: Ya gotta have tough skin on this board if you're a Nell fan. Anyone that truly knows her, loves her because we know what she's about. Everyone else, judges what they see on the floor. That said, I've seen folks on here call coaches "the best" who have never won a region title so ya gotta take it with a grain of salt.

 

For the record, Nell was absolutely the right coach for my daughter, but I don't think she's the best coach top-to-bottom in the state or in NKY...

Got no problem with her being tough. I gave her credit for this and in my post that is not what disqualified her for the elite list of top five in the state. Good for her, to be truly successful, you have to be tough, and you have to be the one that sometimes people don't like. Like I said, it was not this about her that keeps her off my list.

 

I honestly do believe you can be tough, and you can demand excellence, and you can even yell and push very hard, and you do not have to use useless filler words to do it. If you do, then in my opinion, there is a part of you that is like the mainstream or the average. And it was this part that disqualifies her for me for top five in the state. Yes, she is on a list of great coaches with all her 20 plus wins, but having an average, "like everyone else", approach to communication and how you get attention is not good enough or unique enough for my top five list. Look at it this way...You can settle for cussing to get attention, or you can have a special talent or work to find creative ways to earn respect and get attention. John Wooden...Tony Dungy...they figured it out, and it is these types that I would put on my top five. They are tough and hard, but at the same time, they chose to find a more honorable way to carry themselves and communicate, that eventually worked better in the long run.

 

There is no need to have tough skin for what I am saying...I am not insulting her. Again, I am acknowledging her great accomplishments and her great coaching. I only believe that there is a part of her that could even be better and lift her even higher in regards to greatness.

Exactly my point. When you have a top five in the state list, there is not going to be very many left...only five For top five, the standard should be higher. Wins and losses, and showing young people to not be like everyone else...be better in all area's.

 

I am not disqualifying any coaches from coaching, only from the top five list. If the standard isn't higher then, just put them all on the list.
