In your opinion, who are the top five best girls basketball coaches still coaching girls basketball in Kentucky?

Nell Fookes tops my list. Stowers at SK does a great job.

I guess the answer to this question lies in your definition of what "best" means. For my money I'd pick Coach Richey over Nell or Stowers any day because my definition of "best" is based on the experience my daughter would have playing for the coach. Nell may have more wins, and Stowers should win the 8th Region this year, but give me a class act who respects her players and the game, who has integrity, and whose players conduct themselves in a manner in which everyone can take pride any day of the week. And did I forget to mention, they usually have one heck of a team and consistently place players at the next level too.

And lack of being able to handle the ball against pressure. That being said, I would not be surprised if SK does win the 8th. Just saying that Moone's suggestion that they "should" win it is a bit strong at this point.

I'll second that. Coach Richey would be higher on my list than Stowers and Fookes.

I can see where someone might think this because at one time this was true. However, SK is no longer what I would consider "loaded" at every level. There have been many girls stop playing and even a couple move schools.

 

With the Senior class, it is safe to say that they will be still be "loaded" even though they are not as deep as they once were. Should end up with around 7 Seniors on the roster.

 

This years Junior class has thinned quite a bit, number wise. A few girls from that class (at least 3) have decided to give up basketball and focus only on volleyball. Unless any "new girls" have shown up, they will only have two Juniors left on the roster this season and more than likely, only one of those two will see significant varsity minutes.

 

This years Sophomore class, last years freshmen, hasn't always been thin like it is now. That class has had 4 or 5 that have hung up bball to focus on other sports or left the school. That class will also be down to 2 at the most, probably only one.

 

There will be some quality freshmen this coming season, but even that class took a loss when Kennedy Baugh went to Notre Dame.

 

Basically, SK is loaded with Seniors, and that is it. When this Senior class graduates, SK will be very, very thin in the upper classes.

As far as getting back on the thread topic, there was a thread about Bourbon County hiring Bill Watson, the former long time coach at U Pike. With his college level experience and his many years of relationships and contacts, shouldn't he be considered one of the top five girls high school coaches in the state? I would think so.
