Heard Dontel Rice might be coming up tonight too.

Chames and Hill will be there....along with Jaylen Avery. Haven't seen that kid in years.

Solid action tonight...here is a list of players who were there:

Michael Beuter

Brady Hightchew

Jake Geisler

Jake Thelen

NKU JUCO PG (Not sure of name but dude had a nasty put back dunk)

Dontel RIce

Braeon Avery

Jaylen Avery

Holmes starting 5 (Bolden, McClendon, Housely, HIll, Chames + Avery and Steffan Greene)

A couple more kids that I didn't know. Great games though between the older guys. Will post more later.

Nice showing by all that played tonight, I think the entire Holmes team showed up.

1st to 7 baskets is the winner. NewCath starting 5 beat the Holmes starting 5, but Newcath was running some of their plays and Holmes had difficulty finding their shots. Then the Holmes starting 5 took on the team consisting of Jake Giesler (NKU), Jake Thelen (Bellarmine), Justin Jackson (NKU), Michael Bueter, Brady Hightchew, & Drew Burns (Brossart) and beat them by one, Bolden found his "stroke" in this one with 4 deep 3-balls. Rod Avery looked real good and Chames had a nice dunk in this game, but Jake Giesler had a real nice "throwdown" off a missed shot as well.

Dontel Rice had a really nice stroke from the outside, but looked a little winded running the floor in the games he played. Still trying to figure out who the kid from Lloyd was.....dropped some unbelievable "dimes" tonight in a couple games. I think they said he graduated a few years ago?????

Don't think Ronnie was expecting to see some many kids there tonight (about 40 total), but to his credit he made it work and I think the different levels of competition was good for all involved. I know all the folks there to watch enjoyed what they saw. Walter has some video, including a dunk or two.

Justin Jackson, and the kid can "flatout" get off the floor. He had a "nasty" one last Thursday night over Drew.

Should have charged admission....wow.

Where is Jalen Avery these days?

Where is Jalen Avery these days?

I believe Lockland (Cincinnati), same school that the Short kid from Newport transferred to.

A few thoughts from tonight:

1. The Moeves boys will fit in nicely to round out the Newcath starting 5. Both have good size in the 6'1 range and impressed me with their defense. They will provide shooting that Newcath didn't have without them. Both looked solid from outside tonight and seemed to rebound well.

2. Drew McDonald has completely transformed his body. WOW! I didn't ask when I talked to him tonight but I'd guess he has lost atleast 30 lbs. Looked like his usual self tonight mixing it up inside while also stepping out for the occasional mid range or outside jumper.

3. Jake Schulte's length will cause problems for teams this year. Had several nice blocks. Needs to get stronger around the rim but overall looked solid.

4. James Bolden struggled some the first game with his shot but really got hot from the top of the key and left wing down by the entrance in the second game. His handles are so quick and end to end is a blur with the ball. Had a couple nice assists tonight, including a nice dime in between two defenders that led to a Chames "dunk" (if you want to call it that, kind of just raised up and layed it in without pulling the rim down) to win against the college group.

5. Markel McClendon's defense continues to impress me.. His quickness really shows at that end and he had a couple steals just from being alert and seeing a guy with the ball being pressured at midcourt and not paying attention. He would take off and just grab the ball from behind.

6. A coach told me this not too long ago and I now feel comfortable repeating it...Quentin Chames has the chance to absolutely dominate this year down low. When he wanted a rebound, nobody was going to out muscle him or go up over him and get it. Really liked seeing him and McDonald battle down low even though it was just an open gym. Good battle. Also had a nice oop dunk.

7. Rod Avery showed a nice mid range game tonight hitting 4 in a row in one game and also skying for rebounds when in position. Jumper isn't pretty but to his credit I've watched him use the same form all summer and it continually go in. WIll be interesting to see how he is used this year for Holmes.

8. Pangallo and Housely didn't do anything spectacular but both played within themselves and did a nice job not forcing things. I stand by my comment that Pangallo is a top 20 kid for 2015. He is just so fundamentally sound and doesn't make mistakes with the ball. Kind of struggled with the mid range jumper tonight but I'm sure that will come as he gets back in full basketball mode.

I think Coach Dawn did a great job handling the numbers tonight. As LB stated, there was every bit of 40 kids but he made it work and unlike most open gyms, this was structured and it seemed to flow smooth. When one game was over, he was immediately getting the next two teams out on the floor. Also made sure the younger kids there played against eachother to keep the competition level even.

I believe the Holmes kids were told they were welcome to bring a group of FIVE back over next Monday if they want to particpate in open gym again. I noticed Coach Dawn talking to several different guys individually throughout the session when they were near him on the baseline in between games.

I was told Schroder tonight by a different varsity head coach for Avery. Not sure if he is there or Lockland. He sure has filled out since his freshman year though. Last time I saw him he was rail thin and now he looks to have put on a lot of muscle. Definetly a kid that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Talked to him tonight and he is so well mannered and well spoken. Kid can definetly play too.

Coach Dawn is nothing but pure class. He would do any thing to help any kid!

That's awesome. NKY needs a place for great summer matchups.

Agree 100% on the Moeves', they will fill in nicely, both play great "D" and can hit their shots.

Drew was killin' it from "downtown", above average shooter from outside for a big man.

Jake and the block shots....nothing unusual there, did have a nice jamm in one of the games.

Bolden was "cold" in game one, but most definitely got "hot" after that. IMO, he was trying to be a little too "flashy" with some of the moves, but the kid is a player and a treat to watch.

Zach does a great job of "running the show" for the Breds. He did miss a few shots, but everybody will have one of those nights, definitely nothing to worry about he will be just fine.

Chames has come a long way from his days on the bench at Holy Cross, he has turned into a very good player.

I think some of the best action last night was between Housely or Avery (can't remember which) and Brossart "big man" Drew Burns. They were playing real hard against one another, pushing and trying to get position, that at one point Burns had his shirt ripped apart. I know Walter was filming this game so hopefully when can see some of that action.

Walter you are correct, Coach Dawn did an excellent job with the flow of the games and the match-ups. However this is nothing new, it is how he runs it all the time.

Can't wait to see some video. I know you want to wait to get more on film next week before you post it, but hey maybe give us a little tease.
