Best Tools for Learning another language

Featured Replies

Obviously living there is the best. But has anyone used any of the language programs like Rosetta Stone with success?

Have you checked out this site? Duolingo | Learn Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and English for free It seems to work similar to Rosetta Stone, but I haven't gotten too deep into it.

I used Rosetta Stone before and it works, but you really have to do every volume for it to be effective or worthwhile. I imagine that would be well over $1,000. They also make cheap flashcards you can buy on Amazon that help vocabulary. I have also watched news broadcasts and read newspapers in that language, which helps make up for not actually living where it is spoken. You at least pick up the accents, cadence, and how the language is actually used instead of having to learn by rote.

Which language are you thinking of? A different character set would change things. That's just a nightmare. :lol2:

Just use google translate I think is what it is called. You can type out what you want to say and then it will print out your translation in their language. I used it in a Japanese airport once. Worked like a charm. :D

I know a lot of people born and raised right here that butcher their own language on a daily basis. Heaven forbid anyone uses them to try to learn English! (Sorry, that didn't help you. But, just got a chuckle out of how you had worded it.)

"Take me to Taco Bell" shouldn't be too difficult. :D

Got you covered then!

Been doing the exercises on the app for awhile now. I like it. Gonna stuck with it for awhile to see how it works.

Let me know how it goes. I'm curious how advanced it gets.

Will do. Right now I'm only using the app. It's made like a game. Definitely has my interest piqued.

Considering I have 6 years of French I might should have tested that first.

The web version is nearly identical with Rosetta Stone. I might try the app too if it's different. It's really invaluable as a free service, especially if it gets advanced enough.

I messed around on Duolingo for a few weeks with German. I liked it, but didn't fully commit to taking the time.

Get a hot Portuguese GF. That would be the best way.

Thomas Jefferson taught himself Spanish by having side-by-side copies of Don Quixote in Spanish and English.

As someone who studied both Latin and Spanish in a similar manner, I don't recommend it.

Immersion. That's the best trick. If Portuguese is what you're thinking, I recommend two weeks on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janiero. You're welcome.

Nevermind what I said. This guy's an expert language educator. Seriously good advice.
