Paintsville Names Joe Chirico Head Coach

Featured Replies

Paintsville named longtime assistant Joe Chirico its newest head football coach last week.

Chirico served 11 years on the Tigers’ staff following a four-year stint as an assistant at Prestonsburg.

Chester McCoy, who had taken the job in March, has decided to stay in Magoffin County to deal with family health issues.

Chirico is a former Logan High School (W.Va.) and Marshall University football standout. He also played basketball while at Logan, from where he graduated in 1989. He was a two-time All-State selection in football.

Congratulations to Coach Chirico and Paintville. Can Coach Chirico be successful at Paintsville? Can he bring some excitement to the football program and increase the numbers?

The one thing that's hurt Paintsville, along with other small Indys and rural

County schools is Soccer. I know that's not P.C to say, but it's fact.

It is a fact. But it's also provided many kids with an opportunity that wasn't there 20 years ago, so it's hard to complain too much.

I can complain about it. It is irresponsible for the administration to put the programs in position to where they can't succeed. For example, soccer has been brought up before at Raceland. The administration will not allow soccer to be implemented due to the fact that our school does not have the numbers to support that many activities during one season. And Paintsville has a much smaller enrollment then does Raceland. It was an irresponsible decision on the part of the Paintsville administrations trying to do to much. Sometimes less is more.

Are there more kids playing soccer or football at Paintsville?

From what I hear: 26 football and 12 soccer.

In their defense, the fans have said there are only three or four soccer players that would be playing football, take that with a grain of salt.

^^ those are 12 potential skill kids for paintsville. I don't know much about soccer, but I do know you better be able to run a little...just like you do in football.

I'm not sure what opportunity it's presented. As I tell kids who are thinking about the two sports:

One is played worldwide and outside of the US, is THE main sport and has been for centuries.

Football not only plays more kids, but is only (well, 99% anyway) played by kids in the US.

I know a couple small colleges in Kentucky that I think if you speak English, you can't play. Lol

From what I hear: 26 football and 12 soccer.

Didn't see this before I made my last post.

So without soccer you'd have 30 kids playing high school sports while with it you have 38 playing. I know more people like football than soccer (me included, especially high school) but anything that gets more kids out and doesn't bankrupt the school can't be considered too bad.

Maybe, but we have the benefit of hindsight. What I am saying when you have, say, 70 males in your high school you know that you don't enough numbers to field a football team and a soccer team and still be competitive.

We can't react what occurred at Paintsville, but to give a brief hypothetical: Paintsville starts a soccer team, the football numbers dip a little and they have one bad football season. At the same time, Johnson Central (less then two miles away) has it's best season in school history. A few kids decide they want to leave Paintsville because they had a bad year and Johnson Central had a good year. Paintsville has another down year with less players playing. Johnson Central gets a brand new stadium with turf and new bleachers, and has another great season. More players decide they would do better at Johnson Central. Paintsville's numbers go down further. Johnson Central has it's third great season in a row. Paintsville decides it can no longer be competitive with Johnson Central and opts out of a long standing rivalry with Johnson Central in the Apple Bowl. More players decide it's better to play for Johnson Central then to stay at Paintsville. Some of the remaining players at Paintsville decide they don't want to have a losing season in football, so they decide they would rather play soccer then football. Football numbers go down even more.

It is a chain reaction, all because they wanted to give some more players an opportunity to play a sport, instead of focusing on what they have and making it better. Just my opinion.

H.D., I never have and never will be accused of being politically correct (Ram can attest to that ) and I 100% agree with you.

I was going to post basically the same thing. At a small school there are only so many athletes simply do to the numbers of kids as opposed to bigger schools. Spreading athletes out between two sports at the same time of year imo takes away from both teams. I am certainly glad that Raceland hasn't started a soccer program and I hope that they never do.

I wish Paintsville the best in getting their football program built back up. I know what that used to be years ago. Raceland and Paintsville have had some great football games through the years During the 70's and 80's that game was an annual battle...very competitive, good, hard hitting football games.

How many small (1A football size) have what would be considered successful ongoing soccer and football programs?
