Which is a better measure of a players career greatness, a Championship Ring, a Finals MVP or a Most Valuable Player Award?

 

Ring Pro: Shows player was a part of Championship team.

Ring Con: Shows player was part of a Championship team, a lot of guys have rings.

 

MVP Pro: Shows player was the dominant player for a given season.

MVP Con: Shows player was hot for a single season but may not always play at that level during career.

 

Finals MVP Pro: Shows player was the best player on the best team.

Finals MVP Con: Anyone can get hot for a series, See Danny Green this season.

In Today's society, players are measured by rings. Right or wrong to some, that's how it is.

Why? Big Shot Bob has a ton of rings, several big slow centers for the Bulls got them in the 90's.

 

After looking at the winners I would think that Finals MVP should be considered equal to or maybe greater than MVP, but not just winning a ring.

Lebron fans will say MVP's show who's the best players after all they were the best for the entire season.

Kobe fans will say Rings because he has 5, even though Shaq was MVP of the first 3

MJ Fans will say...doesn't matter he was the best...5 MVP's 6 Rings and 6 Finals MVPs

Two Finals MVP's averaged less than 10 points for the series...that's crazy. Wes Unseld and Dennis Johnson in back to back years averaged 9.0 points per game and were named MVP.

No I don't believe he should. That's why any measure you use to evaluate a player can be skewed. In all honesty I think it's all in the eye of the beholder.

In reality, the best measure of a player's talent is the regular season MVP. It is the only one of these awards that a player wins solely based on individual consistent greatness.

 

That being said, if you want to leave a legacy of all-time greatness in your sport then you will need all of these awards and you need them in multiple doses, IMO.

If you base a players greatness on their hardware alone, you don't know basketball. You would be lead to believe Robert Horry is a first ballot hall of famer with using that logic alone. And if you dig deeper, MVPs can come at times when dominant/elite players are scarce, NBA finals MVPs can come with a hot streak (potentially Danny Green), and Robert Horry can win many rings. All are skewed.
