I do a lot of reading on here, but not much posting.

 

So I was wondering what everyone thinks about this - the Kentucky state High School AAU Tournament - it was this past weekend at KBA.

 

Scott County won the title, posting a 7-0 record in pool play and the elimination bracket. Beat Henry Clay, Cordia and Perry County Central en route to championship.

 

Trent Gilbert was named tournament MVP - 37 points in finals against PCC (He averaged 25-30 pts for the tourney).

 

I guess my questions are this: How much of an indicator can this be about the upcoming winter season? Can you even start to judge teams this early in the summer?

 

Really, I just wanted to gauge everyone's general thoughts, negatives or positives etc. etc.

This is not an indicator at all unless there were teams like Hoptown, Ballard, Southwestern, Warren Central and a few others playing..... I believe Scott County will do we'll this season but I don't believe a lot of the teams they beat en route to getting there will even be factors at the State level this season...

If no 6th, 7th, 4th, or 2nd region teams are present then that is 25% of your competition absent, and teams out of those four regions always have a chance to win it.

Both Henry Clay & PCC will both be very good this coming season so victories over them is meaningful, but in summer ball you never know who they had and didn't have. With Cordia from what I hear they are supposed to be much better too. There again depending on who they had and didn't have. I am sure Scott County will be very good as they always are. They seem to dominate this summer tourney. The Derek Smith being the same weekend splits the talent pool and the DSS has many of the 6th & 7th teams so it is usually much stronger.

A better way to judge would be to compare past results and how the winning tam or semifinal teams did in their upcoming season. Is there a list of past Ky State AAU champs?

Have been looking for a list of past winners, but no luck.

Henry Clay losing Trey Grundy has sunk them in a major way.

Scott County is a team that doesn't adjust to other teams and always plays one way. That's their strength, but when you don't prepare for that like the regular season it makes it very tough to play them. They will be good again, as always, next year but this weekend is not the indicator that they are the team to beat in the 11th. I wasn't there but I am guessing teams didn't play Gilbert (who keeps getting better btw) as close as they will during the season.

 

I think Henry Clay will be fine without Grundy, but that is of course a big loss. For those that don't know, Teddy Ware left HC and is playing at Scott County.

 

Last year, PRP beat Scott County in the semifinals but I can't remember who they played in the finals. I am thinking Henry Clay, but I may be wrong.
