Coaches/Players of the year

Featured Replies

Great insight...thanks...I would say its very important for you to be a member....you have several girls that could have a chance to make all state down the road....at least if you nominate them you have done your part...if all the area coaches don't belong though your girls will probably not be chosen bc the coaches that know them best will be the nky coaches and that's where they would need to get there votes from.

I would love for this to be a big topic at the next coaches meeting.

It is brought up every year at the 1st meeting.

Ok not to sound like a complete donkey but what does everyone say or do. Do 9th region coaches think this is ok not to be members? Strickley as a parent this is not ok with me, it no longer matters for my kid but it could for kids down the line.

If you are a coach and I know most at least read on here what are your reasons for not signing up bc I would think at least with the posters on here we can not find a good excuse not to.

I think we need to start the NKY Softball Commission to out any coach or AD who hires a coach who is coaching for the wrong reasons or thinks its ok not to do what every other coach in other sports in the area has to do. Softball needs to quit taking a back seat to other sports, its not a rec league sport let's not treat it like one. I would like to see what would happen if Drew Barker didn't get nominated for awards in football or James Bolden or Brandon Hatton in basketball those coaches would probably lose their jobs. We have girls that are very close to those guys in respect to ability and or college offers but yet we as a softball community can not get our stuff together.

I don't know all coaches in the area and almost all I do know do a great job so the above comment is only for a small percentage, but damn get your stuff together and get involved.

Rule 8

So how many 9th region coaches voted on this, by the looks of it I would say just 1.

So are you assuming the Ryle coach was able to vote for themselves for coach and vote for their own player and those were the only votes cast for the 9th region? Is there someone that can give us some clarification on how this works? Can coaches vote for other coaches and players from other regions or can you only vote for players & coaches from your own region? Does anyone know if the coaches from Conner, Lloyd or Covington Latin actually voted or not? Sorry I seem to be confused, this just seems really strange to me.

It should be brought up at every meeting and the benefits, especially for the players, should be discussed.

Yes that is what I am assuming, I could be wrong and if I am I am but neither the coach or the player would have been in my top 10 as far as the voting goes. They have both had a nice career but IMO neither are deserving this year. Of course my opinion does not matter and maybe other people see it different.

So here is what I have been told.........member coaches attend meetings in Lexington, initial meeting nominations are made, stats & promoting of the girls is done. The actual voting for the nominees is done by other coaches, not the one doing the nominating. Here in lies the problem as I had it explained to me......if all the coaches do not attend meetings, then obviously the choices to select are extremely limited, if there are any choices to be made at all. I cannot believe that Ali Crupper, had she been nominated, would not have won 9th region this year, or even last year!! If Haylee won it the two years prior while Cassie Hamilton & Jenna Sander, among others, were on the team then Ali surely would have won it just for her pitching stats alone.

Conner has had several players that in my opinion could have certainly been candidates also (mention them because they are also a member school & was surprised at one point that Haylee won it over KC Straley, Katelyn Williams, Sarah Begley, & Katelynn Halcomb). However, from what I was told Conner has not participated in these meetings.

In all fairness I can only say this for four years ago when this whole process was explained to us as we sat waiting for the dinner presentation to begin. This after driving Haylee back to Lexington from a TN tournament and then after presentation right back to TN. Until I heard the process, I thought 9th Region POY award was an honor. For most regions it probably is. If more 9th region schools were involved and more girls were actually nominated then it would be. IMO, at this time it is a joke.

I know that Joe mentioned at the end of the year that he intended on getting involved with the KSCA next year and with Highlands and St. Henry too, let's hope even more schools get involved and make the POY award and All State awards what they should be & have multiple representatives from the 9th region in the EAST/WEST All State game!! The hard work the girls do certainly warrants better representation than they have gotten to date.

Sounds about right I guess....so if Ryle was the only school to attend and promote their player it makes sense that they win. I am almost glad they win if this is what really happens.... if they are the only coaches that want to promote their kids and do what they should be doing than good for them. I said earlier that I didn't think Ryle's coach deserved to win the award this year, I take that back I think she is the ONLY coach who deserves to win. (sorry softballfan!)

This could also be part of the problem for some. I know it's only and hour, hour fifteen minute drive to Lexington from NKY, but some may not want to make the drive, hell I don't know. :idunno: BTW, how often do they meet, for how long, what day of the week?

I definitely would not blame a coach for the far reaches of eastern or western Ky for not driving all that way when they could simply e-mail their nominations.

Guess if you are opposing coaches you tend to not like other coaches? Cause carpooling at that point would be out of the question, right? I mean look outside the box and do what is right for the girls. However, I believe most coaches get a stipend for travel....calculate this into that. Ask the former Ryle coaches how it works, I am sure they got paid for all their meetings they attended.

LB...we are talking about 9th Region coaches, not other regions. Looks like we are the lowest represented region in the association with 4. 14th Region is next with 5, 15th Region has 6. Over half the 16 regions have greater than 9 schools representing! So if poor ol' NKY wants to stop being looked down upon by everywhere else (I don't believe this but see enough posts claiming we are) then we need to show them what our girls have. No one else is going to promote them!

No worries JMU! They do have the ability to promote, I give them that. Just doesn't look like it is always the most deserving, which leads to yet another argument on their downfall there. But I won't go on a tangent again...it's all worked out how it should.

I agree with you 100%. I'm just throwing possible reasons out there, it's a "head-scratcher" to me. I will say this, I was unaware that asst. coaches could join without head coaches being members, so I will be joining for the 2013-14 school year.

Maybe I can hitch a ride with RCC9 to the 1st meeting. :woot:

now that high school ball is over it's time to talk travel ball.who are some of the travel teams that will be repsented by your dd this summer and what tourments are the in?

Can you keep your eyes closed all the way to Lexington?

When you get there, you'll think he did too!

I would agree with you, however, I do give the coach props for promoting her team by being a member and making the trip to the coaches meeting.
