As a parent I'd like to hear your guys feedback as to how you'd feel if your son had the opportunity to play for the service academies. My house is divided on how we feel so far. Please, all input and contributions to the discussion are welcome......

If you think your child can enjoy (endure) the intense structure and discipline of attending an academy, I'd thoroughly recommend it. Fantastic education and a network that will serve your child well the rest of his/her life.

Get that education, connections and leadership skills that training to be an officer gives you? That's about the best eduction that you can get. Not sure how much I would like to have to move around the country and world if I had a young family.

USNA is nothing to sneeze at. That's a great education and a degree that will mean something in the future.

Many in the professional world view that degree with the same respect as that of Harvard or any Ivy League school. The education is on par and training is unmatched. I would allow my son or daughter to go in a heartbeat and be one proud papa!

I always encouraged my son to consider the military academies as they are truly on par w/ the Ivy League schools academics wise. When graduation time came we were in the midst of two wars and he quickly lost the taste for it. Tough call for a 17 year old to sign onto all of that.

Don't do it. It isn't that hard to find a good job. You only have 1 life.

Wow. I guess they shouldn't play football at all? Or run marathons? Or go to work in a factory? Or, fly? Maybe carry a white flag in their back pocket just in case?

To the question: a diploma from a Military Academy will pay off for your entire life.

Agree wholeheartedly.

I would have no problem with any of my kids going this route, and in fact would encourage it if the opportunity were there. As already stated the academics at these academies is top notch, and the fact that you can serve 20 years and retire, IMO is awesome. Being retired around the age of 40, drawing full government benefits, and then working a job you enjoy doing for a while, sounds really appealing to me!

I do recognize though that not everyone is cut out for this, and it really comes down to is that person able to do it!

Keep reading my post over and over, you may end up getting it.
