Yup. Got to talk to him while I was in Hampton and get a pic with him. Really cool guy and you can tell he loves the game and talking basketball.

Coach K on the other hand... Was sitting next to him and he looked at me so I asked how he was doing. Just looked away lol didn't even respond

He probably saw you taking the picture with Larry Brown.

Traveler Tradition,

How long has the EYBL league been around where you have to finish in the top 24 to qualify for the Peach Jam? This is a new event I know within the last 5 years at least, I know in 2008 they didn't have the EYBL, at least I don't think they did that was really the last time I followed the travel basketball scene every weekend every tournament. Also a player you all had back then, I really liked his game, ended up at Appalachian State but then transferred away from there to Carson Newman I believe, Quinche Dowdell, how did he finish up at Carson Newman?

I believe the Travelers have made the Peach Jam 11 out of the last 17 times actually. But not since the EYBL started , which I believe was 3 or 4 years ago. Who actually knows about their contract other than the Travelers themselves. I find it hard to believe that it's that easy after 19 years with Nike already. Also not so sure its based on performance either, a lot about trust and commitment towards Nike. I definitely agree that there is a lot of talent coming up in the state, and it is refreshing to know it. Love seeing there being so many AAU teams as well, no matter what "level" they are on for all these kids to pursue a dream.

Peach Jam has been around since Nike began its Grassroots program in the mid-90s. The Travelers are one of the original 16 Nike programs, of which there are only 4-5 remaining.

Prior to the EYBL concept, the Nike teams competed in a series of tournaments, and Nike extended Peach Jam invitations based on performance in those events.

Quinche had some injury issues at Carson-Newman that really hurt his career.

Nope, this happened before then lol

Oops. Well, I hope he has better manners in the future. He makes us Dukies look bad by being snobby.

Cal and Larry Brown watched the travelers final game Sat.

McDonald will be added to the 17u roster due to the injury to Jackson Davis.

Since it seems that the U16 & U 17 teams play at different locations on the weeklends, how could he be on both rosters?

I think he is just being added to the roster since they have to be finalized before a certain date...meaning even though he is on the roster, he may or may not travel with the 17U. It really depends on how long Jackson is out. Right now they only have Johnson, Marberry, and Spalding. In the EYBL, you HAVE to have depth down low because of how physical the game is and how many "bigs" every team has.

There are other teams who have players who play 16 and 17U as well.

The 16u Travelers played this weekend in the Boo Williams Invitational in Hampton, VA.They finished 1-2 and didn't advance to bracket play. They lost to Meanstreets from Chicago and Playaz Basketball from NJ. Their sole victory came against the Jackson Tigers out of MS. The first game was an offensive struggle as neither team could find a way to score. The Travelers led by 6 with 2:00 to go but two quick 3's by Meanstreet tied it up. With :05 left Meanstreet had a 2 point lead. CJ Walker got to the rim however got his shot blocked resulting in a 52-50 Travelers defeat. Also in attendance were coaches from Valpo and Illinois. In game 2 the Travelers came out more focused. The Travelers should have won the game in regulation however a missed free throw with :04 left allowed a Tigers player to get the rebound take 2 dribbles and bank in a half court shot to send it into OT. After 2 overtimes the Travelers pulled off a 77-73 victory. The final game was the Travelers best, however Playaz Basketball came away with a 58-53 victory in front of 10 plus colleges coaches inducing former NBA Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown.

The following players stood out for the Travelers.

Tanner Johnson (Lexington Catholic) - 3pt sharp shooter finished as the second leading scorer for the Travelers this weekend

Jalen Perry (Ballard) - most athletic kid on the team who provided 3-4 impressive dunks

Drew McDonald (Newport Central Catholic)- leading score of the Travelers and the best option on offense. Drew has been the most consistent player on the team these first two tournaments.

All 3 games were very close and the Travelers could've very easily ended 3-0.

Thanks again for the update. This is really the only way to get details, so I hope you continue with your summaries each week.

For the record, the Travelers have been to Peach Jam 11 times.

Sorry I meant to say since the EYBL started that the travelers haven't made the peach jam. Not being negative in any way. I know how hard it is to make the peach jam. I played with Kentucky all star team back in summer of '98 that went to the peach jam. Top notch tournament. It was just getting started when I played in it. I wish the Travelers the best and hope they do make it this year. I'm gonna try and go
