Newport Central Catholic 4 Bishop Brossart 3

Josh Cain gets the win, Connor Bartels the save. Breds led 4-0 in 7th. Errors almost allowed Brossart to come back. Thankfully the last ball was hit to zack Pangallo to end the atrocious 7th inning. Breds move on to Lexington for the All A elite 8.

Saturday, May 4th - 10am - Whitaker Bank Park, Lexington, vs winner of Owensboro Catholic/Glasgow sectional.

Mustang starter Nate Verst was touched up for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning, which proved to be the difference in the game.

From that point on both pitchers, Verst and Josh Cain, were brilliant. Cain pitched no-hit baseball through 5 1/3 innings, when Chase Pflum the Brossart designated hitter beat out an infield hit. Nate Verst shut out/no-hit the Breds from the second inning throught the sixth when he allowed a double to Pete Collopy and a single to pinch-hitter Nick Seibert. Collopy was gunned down at the plate to end the inning.

In the Brossart seventh, the Mustangs scored three runs and had two runners on base with one out, when Connor Bartels came on in relief and retired the remaining two Mustangs. In the inning the Mustangs were aided by three NCC fielding miscues and received singles from Clay Kramer and Clay Verst.

Brossart had three hits on the afternoon - Pflum, Kramer, and Clay Verst, while the Breds had six - Grau (2b), Cain (3b - 2rbi), Collopy (2 doubles - rbi), Zach Pangallo (1b - rbi).

Cain pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing three runs (1-Earned) on three hits. He struck out 6 and walked one.

Verst pitched all 6 innings for Brossart giving up four runs on (3-Earned) five hits. He struck out 4, did not issue a walk, and hit one batter. Senior Connor Bartels came on in relief to get the save, retiring the last two Brossart hitters.

Brossart falls to 8-11, losing their third consecutive one-run game. NCC improves to 11-6. They will play the Owensboro Catholic/Glasgow sectional winner at 10am on Saturday, May 4th at Whitaker Bank Park in the 8-team Touchstone Energy All "A" State Tounament. The Breds will attempt to accomplish the "All A Double," having won the All "A" Basketball championship back in February.

NewCath returns ten seniors to this year's lineup from last year's 9th Region Champions, including eight starters, while the Mustangs are re-building after losing six senior starters from a year ago.

Glasgow defeated Owensboro Catholic 5-3 and will be NCC's opponent in the quarterfinals of the Touchstone Energy All "A" State Tournament.

Congrats Newcath on advancing to the elite 8 in the All A State.

Cain and Bartels are solid. Pangallo boy is a stud and only a soph. Congrats to Coach Jeff and the staff and players represent the 9th in All A State.

Nice recap Mustang. :thumb:

Is Tanner Norton playing? Hurt?

Is Tanner Norton playing? Hurt?

I saw him play against someone, so I don't think he's hurt. Maybe he's just having a slow start?? I thought he pitched, but haven't seen him in any box scores.

No hes a catcher

No hes a catcher

He used to pitch as well. A very good pitcher, too!

Tanner Norton is in the starting lineup in his normal position behind the plate.

In yesterday's game he went 0-4 and grounded out with two aboard to end the game.

He had the put-out on Collopy to end the NCC sixth.

You coming to Mt Washington this weekend Mustang?

Sorry, I'm not making the trip. Am leaving for a week of fishing at Norris Lake on Sunday and have some work to do on my boat.

We will broadcast the games, but it will be Mike Schack doing honors.
