While I know there are many other threads on this topic, I'm going to offer my two cents here.

Try looking at it from a coaches point of view. Coaches jobs ultimately are based on winning games. If a coach does not win enough, they are let go. So the coach needs to be able to put the best possible team on the field. If that means an 8th grader makes it over a 7th grader, then so be it.

Winning games also benefits the program and school. If a school can get a reputation of having a good program they have a better chance of attracting kids who are either moving to the area or have a choice of public/private school and are in your district.

Because Johnny is an 9th grader doesn't mean he is entitled to make the team. Playing a sport is a privilege not a right.

I see the Coaches point of view, but isn't this High School Athletics? It is governed by the KHSAA...Ky HIGH SCHOOL Assoc....right?

It still has to be about the players...not the Coaches. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS should have precedent....good or bad.....IMO.

I always thought the freshman and JV levels are for developing players for varsity. I see both sides of it but lets say you keep said freshman over the 8th graders and they never see the field, is it fair to those kids or their parents who pay admission to games and fees? All you have then are disgruntled parents and players and provide a negative atmosphere.

Just because they are decent knothole players doesn't translate to good high school players.

Just my 2 cents

I agree with you. Its about being competitive and keeping the team spirit. I know the 2 they cut and yes they should have been cut. Maybe they should have played with 12 instead of including the 3 8th graders to make it 15. But all 3 8th graders are getting significant minutes. We have 2 freshman playing JV and 1 heading to Varsity soon. I think What the coaches did was right. He has to win to work.

Chemistry is another aspect. Together this freshman team gets along great. And I think this more than anything is why they are winning.

Maybe I'm being a bit nieve but this attitude seems so misplaced when it comes to high school sports. I would file it right along with the practice (rumured) of coaches recruiting players from other schools to transfer to their school strictly for sports and with parents who hold their kids back strictly so they can excel against younger competition.
