Solid pitching from two eigth graders,Colton Hartig and Griffin Thomas.

Did either team cut Freshman STUDENTS to keep these 8th grade non students.......just curious.....probably needs a different thread.

8th graders don't have to go to school?

8th graders don't have to go to school?

SORRY....clarification......did they cut kids that GO TO THAT HIGH SCHOOL....to keep kids that DON"T GO TO THAT HIGH SCHOOL.

Better?

I am aware of two current CCHS freshmen students who tried out for the baseball team, who were cut. When I heard that, I was not aware that 8th graders were selected ahead of them. If all of that is true, it is a shame.

Why is that a shame? There were a couple of 9th graders that were not very good. They were cut and they kept 3 8th graders that are good enough to play up. It just happens.

Judging by the first post from this thread, it sounds like the 8th graders are capable ball players.

Griffin's a nice kid to boot. Glad to hear he is having success. Coached his older brother Grant years ago in knothole ball. His parents are great folks.

I'm sure the 8th graders are great kids, and probably really good players. However, if kids walking the halls of the school that is displayed on the jersey want to play, regardless of how bad they are, they should be playing over kids that don't attend the school.

This topic has been beat to death in many forums. I just firmly believe that high school athletics should be about the kids that ATTEND A PARTICULAR school (even if they "were not very good"). And don't say "the 8th graders attend CCMS .. they'll be there next year". If so, they can wait and play next year.

If you need NON STUDENTS of the HS to field a team (meaning no STUDENT of that HS gets cut) I'm good with 8th graders trying out and if they are better, they play over the others...........but the minute you have to CUT a STUDENT of the HS....you should not be allowed to keep a Non STUDENT of that HS.

IMHO

I could not agree more! I think many coaches lose sight of the whole reason for any "extra-curricular" activity, to enhance and inrich the experience the experience of "their" student body.

I like to win as much as anybody, more than most but cutting students in favor of non-students is simply wrong. No if ands or buts!

I don't necessarily disagree, but I've seen students try out that couldn't catch, throw or hit at all. It then becomes a safety thing in my opinion. This has been happening for a long time now. I'm not sure there are many (if any) schools in this area that don't have 8th graders or even 7th graders on their rosters.

Fair enough. But the two students I'm aware of that were cut had both been playing CC Knothole since t-ball. Both played multiple positions, and both pitched in knothole. Both were considered "decent" .. they could play.

I just assumed it was a numbers game they got caught up in. Unacceptable for these two STUDENTS to be cut over 8th graders.

CCH doesn't and never has.......but they have the number......

On the team, and playing are two entirely different things. I, in no way, am saying that there should be equal playing time....so a kid that can't catch, doesn't see the field......but you still don't cut a hs student for a non hs student......and consider it right.

Struggle equally then Oldtimebaseball with 9th graders who are moved up to JV, and JV to Varsity to meet need. This explains the influx of 8th graders and some 7th graders who make freshmen squads.

It is a tryout and they're programs who need numbers to meet need and demand for quality baseball players. Freshmen who don't make it, either get better, or make other arrangements. It's getting more and more competitive and is a reality to accept whether we like it or not. It's the nature of the society we live in!
