Unless you live in a community like Jefferson County where there is school "choice" but a majority of students attend the school in their resides district. If you live in the resides area for one of the abysmal schools and can't get your kid in another school then to bad for your kid. But that's OK the teachers union has made sure the best teachers are able to be at the best school.

Exactly! All of those folks dealing with poor education in inner city public schools need to up and move to better communities/school districts....................................................................

Technically, she's right. Parent's don't own their kids, but neither does the community. These are people we're talking about, not property. No one owns another human being.

She wrote back in response and used of all things RACE AND SLAVERY. Cited slave babies being taken by whites, the killing of Indians, forcing Indians to learn new language, culture.

Wonder how some Democrat parents feel about her saying you don't own your kids. The community does. Does Rockmom feel the same since she is Democrat.

I'm not a Democrat. And, I sent my kids to private schools. As far as I'm concerned, I bought and paid for their butts, so they're all mine.

Nope. Parents are going to try to teach and influence their kids more than anyone else. The kids are going to listen to their parents, their friends, their teachers and then shape their own values.

 

Parents can't control what the schools teach or who their kids hang around at school. Parents can only control what school their kids go to.

 

I don't have a problem with the idea of it takes a village to raise a child . My problem with her idea is that we don't spend enough on education when we actually spend more per child than any country and even if you want to look at a % of GDP we are fifth. It is different to me to say a community needs to help raise the child , compared to we need forcefully remove money from private citizens via tax to spend more money on inefficient schools and programs. I find her to be a naive and another out of touch college educator with no real ideas or new solutions.

I used that argument in a few athletic threads with regards to private vs. public schools and was soundly chastened because as I was told moving for many just isn't an option. Then again in Jefferson County they so routinely change the assignment plan for schools that you could move to where you think your kid will go to a better school only to find out that they won't be. What then, move again? And yes I truly believe that the teachers union in Jefferson County has had a significant impact on how bad the schools are.

Without listening to what she has said I do feel that communities do raise our children. Maybe not for the reasons she is stating but the statement..."it takes a village to raise a child" is a true statement. I believe it is an old African statement that I feel holds true to this day. Anyone who thinks that kids aren't a product of their environment are being selectively blind and deaf.

 

You are waisting your breath trying to have a objective conversation about this. i mean, most people who aren't wrapped up so much in the negatvity of politics understands this statement. Instead of, trying to make it a goverment taking care of your kids. It amazes me the lengths some will reach to flip the script.
