April 9, 201313 yr Wonder how some Democrat parents feel about her saying you don't own your kids. The community does. Does Rockmom feel the same since she is Democrat. In the video below, college professor and MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry says your children are not yours – they are owned by the community. She says public education has failed because we have not allowed the state to confiscate more of our money. » MSNBC Host: Your Kids Belong to the Collective Alex Jones' Infowars: There's a war on for your mind!
April 9, 201313 yr See this is what makes discussion so difficult. Both of you know that is not what she meant, nor intended. Her point is that we all have a responsibility to the kids in our community. You know it, I know it and any statement to the contrary is intellectually dishonest.

With some of the communities out there, do you really think I want a liberal ideology teaching my kid. Making them think homosexuality is ok, abortion is ok, you don't need guns, God comes way down the list, tolerate others but forgo your own beliefs. Yeah if you think I want that community raising my child you are very wrong.

The government has no right to think they are allowed to raise my child. I don't want their community teaching my kid. Look at what liberals believe in and tell me if you want them teaching your child. Especially after one MSNBC host had her little girl believing homosexuality is just fine.

April 9, 201313 yr Without listening to what she has said I do feel that communities do raise our children. Maybe not for the reasons she is stating but the statement..."it takes a village to raise a child" is a true statement. I believe it is an old African statement that I feel holds true to this day. Anyone who thinks that kids aren't a product of their environment are being selectively blind and deaf.

Yeah if you think I want that community raising my child you are very wrong. I bet racist white people back in the segregation days felt the exact same way about black people. Interesting parallels.

We need to spend more on public education, the individual needs to be subservient to the state, the state needs to be in control, etc..... Just because an attractive woman says these things in a nice way, many think it to be harmless, but I can assure you it is not.

Anyone who thinks that kids aren't a product of their environment are being selectively blind and deaf. Or if you truly think that is the case, you are giving all kids a crutch to lean on if they fail. Or how does it explain the ones who succeed. Saying they are a product of it means that their family or themselves have no input into how they grow into adulthood. Now, if you mean that their environment they grow up in "influences" them, then I will agree.

So you agree with MountainRef, that others will come in and tell you what you should teach your kids. I mean teach the communities kids....

April 9, 201313 yr So you agree with MountainRef, that others will come in and tell you what you should teach your kids. I mean teach the communities kids.... Nope. Parents are going to try to teach and influence their kids more than anyone else. The kids are going to listen to their parents, their friends, their teachers and then shape their own values. Parents can't control what the schools teach or who their kids hang around at school. Parents can only control what school their kids go to.
April 10, 201313 yr I listened closely to what she said, she didn't say anything about the government. She said the community. My church is part of the my son's and daughter's community. Do those folks think they have a responsibility to my kids, you bet they do, just as I feel I have a responsibility to the other kids in my church. When I was growing up, I belonged to my church, I belonged to my school, and I belonged to my family. I hope my kids have the same experiences. Here is an email I received tonight (I redacted some to protect the innocent): All: Sorry to miss the trip, I will not be able to travel this weekend as I am taking _____ to ___ for soccer on Fri. and a home game on Sat., then on to ______ later on Sat. & Sun. for a baseball tournament with his team. Unfortunately, I will also miss the trip to ______ as I will be out of town from Weds., Apr. 17th thru Mon. Apr. 22nd. We are asking for assistance from our soccer family to take ______ to _____ for the games. This is what she was talking about.

Unless you live in a community like Jefferson County where there is school "choice" but a majority of students attend the school in their resides district. If you live in the resides area for one of the abysmal schools and can't get your kid in another school then to bad for your kid. But that's OK the teachers union has made sure the best teachers are able to be at the best school.
