April 15, 201313 yr Practice, practice, practice- I am a coach; you won't get any argument out of me on the value of practice. My point is that a skill developed in isolation is much more difficult to find consistency with rather than incorporating a skill set as a part of your overall game. There are exceptions to every rule, but I think my statement holds true about big guys that develop outside games. Those players tend to shoot free throws better and I think it is because they developed shooting skills overall that apply directly to their free throw game. Again, JMO I don't buy it. Anybody can learn to be mildly competent at shooting if they practice enough. Nobody's asking them to have range once they step inside half court. Just knock down a wide-open 15-footer. Not that hard. I might shoot the ball five times a year anymore. Give me 2-3 shots to find my spots, and I'll hit 9-of-10 all day long. I wasn't born a natural shooter, though. I worked at it, and got better by repetition. Dwight can too, if he cared enough. He doesn't care, because he's got enough natural ability that he doesn't have to. He, like Shaq, took a pass at being a top-five all-time guy because he doesn't want to put the work in.
April 15, 201313 yr OK, this was the same lame excuse afforded for Shaq back when he was stinking it up at the FT line, and it's not any more reasonable now. It's just a matter of them not bothering to practice it. I'm sure he and Shaq aren't the first guys with big hands in the league, and there's no rule that says centers have to be terrible at the FT line. Have any of you ever shot at a Nerf hoop? Those of you who had it in your dorm rooms or bedrooms growing up probably got pretty good at shooting it, despite the fact that the ball is the size of a softball. How'd you get good? Practice. Exactly...or even Pop-a-shot at the local arcade. Pop-a-shot for a regular hand sized person would be about like these big hand guys shooting...I can drain pop-a-shot all day long!!! They should be able to!
April 15, 201313 yr FT shooting as a whole isn't any good anymore and nobody can hit a mid-range jumper it seems. Why? Because pick up games (where the majority of basketball is actually played during the developmental years) only focuses on shooting 3's and getting the the rim. Does nobody play 21 anymore? You guys remember 21? You hit a shot then go to the line for free throws, if you get to 20 and miss FT you go back to 11 or 13. Those were some pressure packed free throws...

April 15, 201313 yr My players still play it. Everybody should. I hated it when I first went off to school at WKU all those years ago and nobody played 21. All they wanted to play was 31 -- no FTs allowed, but mugging encouraged. I found it at a lot of other places back in the day as well (back when I could somewhat hold my own through solid rebounding and a lot of craftiness).
April 15, 201313 yr I don't like DH. He's a big whine bag that doesn't get his way, he wants to throw fits like he did in Orlando.
April 24, 201313 yr There is no excuse for anybody in the NBA (and I'd even go as far to say College as well) not to be able to shoot free throws. I'm with Schue, the guys that suck just aren't willing to put the time in.
