Take advantage of your free public education, go to school, attend college, graduate, and move. I know many who have done just those things. Acting like breaking the law is the only option is ridiculous. It is the easiest option.

 

Btw, moving away, whether it be to Lexington or to Charlotte (which is where a lot of ppl my hometown my sister's age ended up) does absolutely nothing for the region. It actually makes it worse.

Agreed. Now we can add 10s (2010s).

Granted, but why the shift? Fifty years ago, youth gangs settled their differences with tire chains and baseball bats in rumbles. Now, it's drive-by shootings. Was their history not also shaped by guns? What changed?

Cultural decay? As the article states, the absence of a husband and father from the home is a strong contributing factor to poverty, school failure, crime, drug abuse, emotional disturbance and a host of other social problems. I fully agree with that sentiment. Each generation seems to raise the next with less empathy, respect (both self and mutual), sense of right and wrong and general human decency.

I have a follow-up with two instances from our public schools which occurred this week:

 

example 1: One 5th grade girl doesn't like another so she takes the scissors and cuts off her back pack straps...no less than six other kids see her do it. Her mother is contacted and advised. Rather than discipline the child herself or even question her child, she denies the charges and demands to confront the accusers. She is missing out on a great parenting opportunity.

 

example 2: Two young men get in a fight, but it is broken up. The next day, the mother of one of the young men comes to the school and attempts to distract teachers and administration so her young man can seek out the other from the fight the day before and "finish it". Luckily, all administration was not distracted and the situation was avoided before the 2nd fight could occur.

 

These are facts from out public schools hot off the presses.

Same here. That's a big part of the problem as well these days, parents take the kid's side regardless of the fact the kid is wrong.

Agreed. nowadays, it is a full inquiry, parent advised, parental denial and blame back to the school or the environment, etc. And somewhere in here the child loses an opportunity to learn about honesty and respect for others. Is it any wonder why we are getting so screwed up?
