It's easy to cherry pick a year to make your point. Different years will produce different results, depending on the time of the year, the goods used for comparison, and the region. BTW, I get my bread for a dollar or less a loaf, my gas for 3.49 and my hamburger for much less than $4.

 

Gas is $3.69 where I live, and I guarantee in urban areas it is closer to $4+. Kroger brand hamburger I get is $2.99; if I want something leaner than 80/20 I'm paying around $4 a pound. Bread is probably around $1-1.50, I'll give you that.

No, workers deserve a raise in pay when they provide their employer greater benefits by having them as an employee, thus making them more difficult to replace. Don't take the minimum wage and be happy, make yourself a more desirable employee. There are many ways to make this happen, even in laborer positions. Perhaps you could be more productive per hour than the employees willing to take your position for the same wage. The markes sets wages based on this premis. BTW, how many jobs do you actually know of that pay minimum wage that are not retail cashier jobs?

Of course the cost of living has gone up but my guess is inflation has averaged about 2.5 to 3% in the last 10 years, not exactly skyrocketing. My point is that you can make or break any argument by picking a particular year or other parameter. For instance, in 1957 milk was $1 a gallon. I bought it last week for $1.99 but it's usually $2.59. Either way it's gone up 1.5 times the 1957 price while the minimum wage is 6.5 times what it was. Different years and products will get different results. It is obvious that the minimum wage has not kept up with overall inflation though.

The costs of living are skyrocketing, but I don't understand how raising the minimum wage is a solution while our economy is experiencing high rates of unemployment, and raising the minimum wage would surely increase unemployment for young and/or uneducated workers.

 

If you want to fix the costs of living, we can talk about inflation, but raising the minimum wage is counterproductive and contributes absolutely nothing to lower-class and middle-class workers.
