The poverty level for a family of four is $22,313. If you are two to four people in a family making $31,200 a year, your taxes would be very low. Many people get it done, as my parents did for a large part of my life, without ever taking the first dime of assistance.

It should at least be $8.00 an hr. 8x40 hours=320 a week, 640 every pay period (before taxes). I don't know if the answer is to add more tax breaks for companies to hire. My problem I have with the minimum wage is it doesn't offer incentive for people to move away from government assistance. In most cases, some people are worse off working 40 hours a week at 7.25 than they are receiving government assistance. IMO if we as America want to reduce government assistance, minimum wage is a starting point.

A grown adult should have the work ethic to advance in their career above a minimum wage job. They aren't meant to support families, by definition they are entry level positions. It isn't on me to support bad life decisions. Not to mention the jobs that will be lost when it is raised.

This may be true, but your parent weren't living with the prices of clothes, food, gas, and others things that are happening today.

Only if you believe government is the only provider of assistance to those in need.

I stand by it. May not be the "nice" thing to say, but the truth hurts. People working a minimum wage job, what effort did they put in to get a degree, or to gain a skill to advance their career aspirations. Some people aren't meant for school, so why not get a skill. A person needs to make themself valuable to earn a higher wage. Government shouldn't be handing out raises in the private sector. I understand people lose jobs and can't help it. That is why I'm all for short term help with unemployment, but adults need to take responsibilty for their own lives. If you want to make more money then go out and find out what skill you need to acquire to make a higher salary. I grew up in a city where a lot of my peers had the same chances to advance as I did, they chose not work and take part in other activity. I don't feel bad for them because I know the effort I had to put in to get to where I'm at.

They were living at that level as late as the late 90's. They were able to own their own house, and 150 acres of property in a low selling county. Many of the problems we have in this country are people spending more than they have, no matter how much they make.

Do you really believe our welfare state reduces crime? Perhaps a lack of assistance beyond housing would transcribe to better preparation on the part of citizens to be part of the workforce. As you stated earlier, there is no motivation for anyone caught in the welfare cycle.

In 1957 the minimum wage was $1.00, hamburger was $0.29 a pound, gas was $0.25 a gallon, and a loaf of bread was $0.15. Today minimum wage is $7.50, hamburger is $4.00 a pound, gas is $3.75 a gallon, and bread is $2.50 a loaf. You do the math.

If the Gov't is forcing redistribution of a private companies funds by force that is a government handout. Money doesn't appear out of thin air , if more money goes to one person less goes to someone else or a job is eliminated.
