Brossart's baseball team plays their home games on the field behind St. Mary grade school which is a couple of short blocks away from Brossart.

 

They don't play at the complex on Route 8? Where the softball team plays? The name is escaping me right now.

Name is Pendry. And the Freshman team plays there sometimes, but the fields are a little too small for Varsity.

I think so. Ever since I can remember that has been the home field, but 95-96 is a little before my time. I'm assuming it was.

St. Mary parish high school was founded in 1954. The basketball team went 0-18 that year. Became Bishop Brossart District High School after in 1964, with St. Mary; St. Philip; St. Joe, Cold Spring; St. Joseph, Camp Spring; Sts. Peter and Paul; and St. John grade schools being designated as Bishop Brossart feeder parishes/schools. Bishop Ferdinand Brossart, a local product, served as Bishop of Covington from 1915 to 1923.

While St. Mary High School the basketball program never had a winning record with their best being 4-15 in 1959-60.

In 1968-69 Brossart experienced their first winning season going 20-7, led by Mel Steffen, the first-ever member of our 1,000 Point Club. The following year Greg Schwegmann joined Steffen on the 1,000 Point Club.

Mel Steffen will tell you that he would be the school's all-time leading scorer if it weren't for persistent suspensions for smoking, and considers himself responsibile for Schwegmann's success since Greg filled in for Mel during those absences.

 

The team played in what was the Northern Kentucky Indepentent Athletic Association through the sixties and seventies, never having won the conference, normally dominated by St. Henry or St. Thomas. In the early 80's the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference expanded to include all Northern Kentucky Schools in three divisions. Brossart was placed in Division III (the smallest) defined by enrollment. We were D-III champs six consecutive years from 1991 through 1996 before petitioning to move to D-II where we have been ever since, having won the D-II title in 2005, 07, 09. We were realigned to the 10th Region in 1996, where we have been competitive ever since.

 

Tom Creamer, a native of Ludlow, retired from the Scott County School system in 1990 (after having won the State Tournament at Shelby County H.S.) and returned to Northern Kentucky, taking the boys basketball job at Brossart in 1990-91 where we experienced instant success and creditability. Although he only stayed two years before returning to Shelbyville, his tenure is generally accepted as the turning point in the program's basketball history. Under Bob Seiter (1992 through 1997) we only had one losing season in five years, and then in 1997 when Willie Schlarman took over and took the Nathan Seiter led Mustangs to the 10th Region Championship game and finished with a 28-7 mark it is accepted that this is the point in our history where we became a perennial regional contender. We won the 10th Region in 2000, and as Sticker Man pointed out had dominant teams in 2005 and 2007 when we were Number 1 in NoKy and in 2007 won the All "A" State Championship.

 

We have not had a losing season in 19 years, since 1992-93 when we were 13-14.

In re-reading my post I mis-stated the actual date that St. Mary High became Bishop Brossart High School. It was actually founded as a district high school in 1961. The 64-65 class was the first graduating class.

I always think he has more than given credit for, but his rebounds are so pronounced that they stay with you, especially as a broadcaster calling each one.
