8th Region News & Rankings

Featured Replies

First off, we hope that everyone had a great Christmas holiday and that travels were safe.

This past week saw the Grant County Braves become the first team in the region to make double digit wins. Undoubtably, the best start for the Braves since before the 1998/99 year. This past week at the Arby's/KFC Holiday Classic at McCreary Central, they went 3-1 with 2 wins over Rowan County and one against Taylor County. The loss against SouthWestern. They are at the Shirley Kearns Tournament this week at Model.

Collins this past week also went 3-1. A win against Louisville Holy Cross and then 2-1 at the King of the Bluegrass with victories against Butler and St. Xavier. The loss against Hopkinsville, just their second on the season. The Titans are off until after the 1st.

Oldham County this past week won their own tournament, Best In Hoops, going 4-0 against Bracken County, Southern, Central and DuPont Manual. They head to Lexington Catholic this week for the Republic Bank Classic. First round against 10th Region toughguy, Bishop Brossart.

Owen County went 1-1 on the week, both games against 31st district opponents. First the 2 point loss against Eminence on Tuesday night and then a 28 point lopsided win against rival Gallatin County. Really shows that the 31st is up for grabs.

Spencer County this week had 5 games and went an impressive 4-1 over the week. Wins against Nelson County & Corbin at home and then 2-1 at the Sarah Barger Tournament @ North Bullitt. Wins against KCD and North Bullitt with the lone loss coming against the same Nelson County team they had just defeated 3 days prior. The Bears will head to Pikeville for their Invitational this week.

South Oldham went 3-1 at Mercer County and the Farmer's National Bank 12th Region Showcase. Wins against Walton-Verona, Fern Creek and Johnson Central with the lone loss against 10th Region powerhouse Montgomery County. The Dragons head North to the Henry County Invitational this week.

The Anderson County Bearcats swept 3 games at the First and Farmers National/Lindsey Wilson Classic @ Adair County. Wins against Hart, Monroe and Adair Counties. This week the Bearcats head north to the Bracken County Invitational with games against Beechwood, Deming and Bracken Counties scheduled.

The Carroll County Panthers went 2-1 last week with a Championship runner-up trophy from the Mike Swauger Classic @ Bellevue this past week. Wins against Berea and Menefee County before falling to Newport in the Championship game. The Panthers head to Larue County and the National Guard Holiday Classic this week with a first round game against Washington County.

The Simon Kenton Pioneers also went 2-1 last week. A win against Rowan County at the Lewis County-McDonalds Showcase, then a loss against Holmes and a win against Ryle. The Pioneers will also take part in the Republic Bank Classic with Oldham County. First round game against Knott County Central.

Eminence had a busy week also last week with 5 games also. 3-2 on the week with home wins against Owen County and Portyland Christian before heading on the road for a 1-2 trip to the Monticello All "A" Shootout. Winning against Red Boling Springs, TN and then losses against Middlesboro and Caverna. This week, the Warriors head out to the Edmonton State Bank Holiday Classic @ Metcalf County with games against Owensboro Catholic, Metcalf County and Greenwood.

The Gallatin County Wildcats had just one game scheduled for last week. The big rivalry game against Owen County which they lost 55-27. The Wildcats will head out to Webster County this week to take part in the Webster County Holiday Classic. Games against Webster & Lyon Counties, Louisville Holy Cross and Hopkins County Central.

The Trimble County Raiders have a 3 game winning streak going into this week win victories against St. Patrick, Deming and Western Hills. Last week, I said they had started to turn the corner and it looks like that continues. This week, the Raiders head to Northern Kentucky to take part in the Silver Grove Coaches vs Cancer Classic. Games against Dayton, Silver Grove and Hancock County.

The North Oldham Mustangs went 1-2 last week with a loss at home against North Hardin before splitting 2 at the LCA Classic at Lexington Christian. A win against Sheldon Clark and the loss against Lexington Christian. The Mustangs are off for the next week.

Henry County went 1-2 at the Capital City Invitational last week. A victory against the new Thomas Nelson HS and then 2 losses against LaRue County and Campbell County. The Wildcats host their own Henry County Invitational this week with Frankfort as their first round opponent.

The Walton-Verona Bearcats 2-4 in 6 games this past week. A big milestone win for Coach Dan Trame against Henry County as he notched career win 300. The Bearcats also finished up the week with a win against Louisville Holy Cross at the Farmer's National Bank 12th Region Showcase. Other games saw losses against Anderson, Christian & Lincoln Counties as well as South Oldham. The Bearcats are off until next week also.

The Shelby County Rockets went 1-1 on the week last week. A win against Model before falling to Franklin County. The Rockets will take part in the Campbellsville University Holiday Classic and play Marion County in the first round.

The Williamstown Demons continue to struggle this past week with 2 losses at the Mike Swauger Tournament at Bellevue against the host Tigers and the Newport Wildcats. They will also head north to Silver Grove with Trimble County to take part in the Silver Grove Coaches vs Cancer Classic. The Demons will take on Reidland, Dayton and Hancock County.

Have a safe New Year Holiday!!!

Need to clarify something for Grant County. This is the fastest that the Braves have made it to 10 victories. Got a message about the 1999-2000 season which the Braves started 11-2. They went out to San Antonio and won the Alamo Shoot-out. They were led by Allen Shafer and Austin Ryan. Sorry for the confusion.

The 1999-2000 team did start out 11-2. They did not pick up their 10th and 11th wins until early January. They finished up the rest of the year going 3-11 making their record for the year 14-13.

We should also point out that Grant County played a much different schedule in those days. They took on some really tough challenges under Coach Kinmon.

Grant has not proven themselves playing an all a schedule. Until someone proves otherwise its collins, south, Oldham and a healthy Simon. Look at those teams schedule. Playing in KOB, republic bank, best in hoops etc. not the Richmond model tourney.

No way that's the rankings. Maybe based on wins not on better teams

How would you change it?

I think Oldham Co would be 2-3 ... tough schedule and playing well right now

Grant County has beaten Simon Kenton, Garrard County, Shawnee, Bourbon County, Rowan County twice, Taylor County and lost to Ryle, Southwesteren, and Woodford County. 10 of their 13 games are against schools that are 3A, 4A, and 5A schools. Do better research next time before you make yourself look stupid for making a statement like you made about Grant County playing an all a schedule.

Good post jaws. However, Bourbon, Garrard, Shawnee, and Taylor County aren't exactly at the top of the food chain in 3a, 4a, and 5a.

I agree. Carr is a beast and has sparked the Braves season. But I will add that as the season goes on, the tests will come. Games with Owen, Pendleton, the rematch with Simon and a resurgent Spencer County will tell if they are ready for districts and a New Castle trip on the last week of February.

A trip to New Castle is expected for GC. All they have to do is beat WV or Williamstown. That is unless thir district does a blind draw.

My bad in saying all a schedule. They have played the second weakest schedule in the region behind Eminence. A trip to New Castle I will agree with. Williamstown and Walton are down. All of those teams mentioned above are way down look at their losses. Cupcake schedules and 20'wins mean nothing. Winning the region is the goal.
