I missed most of the game. Heard some of the 3rd and some of the 4th.

I was listening to 1080's broadcast. Apparently, CCH got a T in the 4th. The 1080 announcer said he felt it should not have been a T and that the officials had had a bad night and had lost control of the game.

What happened on the T?

Sounds like Ruthsatz had a rough night from the field but a big night at the FT line making 19/23.

I can't imagine how many fouls and FTs were in this game.

Something like 72 foul shots were taken by both teams combined. Great atmosphere in the gym from the home crowd. Something Covington Catholic is used to but seemed to help the Tigers keep momentum going and have control of the game throughout. Tigers almost the whole way and was much more seperated than the score showed.

Ruthsatz is a great player! Very poised and under control. Rob Shaw (30 points) seemed to show that he will not concede that "best junior point guard" title though!

According to the X broadcast team, a CC player entered the game as a sub when the horn was sounded bythe X clock operator. However, technically he was not to go in until the ref had blown his whistle. The ref evidently explained that he had no discretion in making the call, but the X announcers and the CC coach evidently thought otherwise. The announcers were highly critical of the refs thoughout the entire game, even acknowledging that some of the "bad" calls favored X. They also gave a lot of praise to Ruthsatz.....very poised and knowledgeable.

I won't go there about the stripes losing control of the game nor will I say they did a bad job as if I say that, their are those on BGP's who will complain that in a loss all CovCath does is complain about the stripes but in saying that I will give you two examples of the lack of professionalism of the stripes last night.

Example #1

CovCath is taking the ball out at the St. X bench side of the gym under the basket after the stripes gave CovCath the possession of the ball. Horn sounds, stripe waves the X player into the game but no one come out. I am waiting and waiting for a X player to come out of the game but no player comes out. I yell to Coach R that X has six players on the court when the stripe hands the ball to the CovCath player to put the ball into play but still no X player comes out. Coach R is screaming as is the entire staff of CovCath and even the CovCath fans that X has six players on the court when the stripe gave the ball to CovCath to put into play, but makes no call. The X coach yells at a kid to get off and finally X player get off the court. In the mean time Coach R calls a time out and demands to know why the stripes didn't call a "T" on X for having six players on the court! Their answer "sorry we didn't see it.

Now I could understand it if one of the X players was standing near the X bench but all six were within a foot of the paint and I am sure of the three stripes calling the game, even Clyde will tell you that one of them is suppose to make sure a player leaves the court when another player enters.

Example #2 the "T" on CovCath

CovCath is coming back after being down by around 17 points. From around the 3 minute mark or so, CovCath is subbing bringing in two players for "D" and then subbing them out when it's CovCath ball with two others (pretty standard in basketball). CovCath commits a foul, CovCath send two players to the scorers table to enter game at next stop in action which in this case is between the two free throws. X player shoots and makes the FT but the X score keeper doesn't blow his horn as the ball hits the ground to allow the two CovCath players to enter the game. Coach R and staff yell down to the time keeper that we have subs (how he didn't see them, or why he wasn't paying attention to the game was beyond me and I won't call it a homer move but) score keep blows the horn Ref nearest center court waves the CovCath players onto the court, as the stripe gives the ball to the X player to shoot his second FT. Stripe in seeing the CovCath player crossing the onto the court as the X player shoots (BTW he misses the shot) calls a "T" on CovCath. Now this same stripe didn't see X having six on the court but he see the CovCath kid cross the line and gives the "T". At worst it should have just been a do over, meaning allow the X player to shoot the FT again but to give CovCath a "T" on the play when the X time keep blew the player into the game as did the stripe near mid court is beyond me.

That play I believe gave X five additional points, the miss FT, two more FT that were made and the ball and X scored taking a nine point lead back to a 14 point lead.

The only way I can describe the stripes was to compare it to a baseball blue who calls a low ball stripe when the visitors are at bat but doesn't give the visitors pitcher that low ball strike when the home team is at bat!

Not meaning or wanting to take anything away from the X player #3 who played an outstanding game.

I didn't complain other than my last statement about the low ball strike comparisons and if you read the other post they made my point valid!

There is a difference in saying a stripes missed calls such as walking, holding or blocking calls compared to the stripes just not paying attention to the game. All my complaints were with time out and the stripes not being aware of what was going on in the game. Huge difference!

Question to those who attend a lot of HS games. Where else but at X does the two score keepers not sit together at the table? X score keeper sits at one end of a long scoring table (not even within shouting distance) of where the visitors score keeper sits! This is the only gym I have been to where the score keepers don't sit next to each other or at least within speaking distance of each other and am wondering if it's done anywhere else!

No big deal just curious?

The St. Xavier boys' basketball team, ranked No. 18 in the preseason coaches' poll, dealt visiting Covington Catholic its first loss of the season 87-78 Friday night.

The win was the fifth in a row for the Tigers (5-1).

Robert Shaw scored a game-high 30 points and dished out nine assists. Brock Kiesler had a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Covington Catholic (6-1) was led by Nick Ruthsatz with 27 points.
