The Lucas Family Coaching legacy

Featured Replies

With the recent trip to the State Championship with Collins, Coach Jerry Lucas joined his father, Roy Lucas Sr., and his brother, Roy Lucas II, as coaching in the Finals. Now, his father and brother both have Championships as assistant coaches but both have had success as a Head Coach. This being said, how does this family stack up against other family coaching heirarchies in the state?

I'm glad that Roy II is at SK working with Kuntz. Brennan's growth has been tremendous. I'm sure the young man has alot to do with it but coach Lucas should get some of that praise as well.

Jack and Joe Morris- Father and Son combo that has accounted for every State Championship @ Mayfield. Need I say more?

Joe, Marty, Crad and Josh Jaggers-All have been or still are head coaches Joe was the state's Winningest Coach of All-Time until Bill Schneider passed him up a few years ago. Joe won 5 State Titles at two different schools (Trigg County and Fort Knox). Neither schools had won titles before and haven't won any after his departures. Marty was the head coach at Lincoln County from '91-'96 where he coached Lincoln to a '93 AAA State Runner Up spot and Mr. Football Jeremy Simpson. Marty was the Offensive Coordinator at Danville for their '00, '01, '03 State Championship teams and the '98, '04 State Runners Up. Marty was the head coach at Mercer County from '05-'08. Everybody knows the State Title in '06, but what most don't realize is that in his first year (pre-merger), Mercer went 10-2 and won their first playoff game in almost 20 years. They were also a Class 5A District Champ in his last year in '08. Crad was the head coach at North Hardin from '08-'11. Josh just finished up his first year as a head coach at LaRue County, where they went 6-6 and he was voted the Class 3A Districct 3 Coach of the Year. He was also an assistant under Marty on Mercer's '06 title team.

Mike and Chad Lewis (Father/Son)- Mike was a head coach for 20+ years at Hopkinsville, East Hardin and Central Hardin. Mike won over 120 games in his time and was the Head Coach for Hoptown's '83 or '84 3A State Runner Up team. He then went to East Hardin, where he was the head coach of East Hardin's '89 State Semi Final team that lost to Paducah Tilghman. Mike then took over as the head coach of Central Hardin (East and West Hardin merged) in '90 through '99. Mike coached Central Hardin to the schools only Region Final appearance in '93 (old 4A). Mike recently retired after being assistants at both Grayson and LaRue Counties within the last 10 years. His son Chad, is the Defensive Coordinator at John Hardin, and was for their '09 State Runner Up team to Highlands. Chad has 1 State Final appearance and 4 State Semi-final appearances as the DC for John Hardin. You hear rumors of Mark Brown at John Hardin hanging it up this offseason, and if that is true, you will likely see Chad Lewis as the next head coach if he wants it.

Joe, Royce and Brad Hood- This is the coaching family of South Central KY. Joe and the late Royce Hood were brothers. Brad is the son of Royce (nephew of Joe). Joe was the head coach at Warren Central for a while, including the 4A State Runner Up teams to Trinity in the early 90's. Royce had head coaching stints throughout his years at Allen County-Scottsville, McLean County and Ohio County where he had very solid years. Brad is the head coach at Allen County-Scottsville and has been since 2006. Obviously, Brad was the head coach at Allen County-Scottsville in 2010 where they fell to Boyle County in the finals.

I guess that old saying of something is in the blood hold true. One thing I've noticed, is not only are these families of coaches, but they have all had success.

Thanks PP92. That is great info.

A friend of mine hooked me up with that info. I can't take credit for it. When it was shared to me I had to post it.

A couple others are the Smith's and French's.

Unless someone has lived under a rock the last 15 years, everybody knows about Chuck Smith at Boyle. His son, Brandon, coaches at South Warren who made it to the 3A Region 1 Semi's this year.

Larry French and his son, Steven. Larry was the head coach at Mercer County and Meade County for years. Most just think about Larry and Boyle's titles in '09 and '10, but he was the head coach at Mercer County in '86 when they were beaten by Heath in the 2A Semi's. He was also the head coach at Meade County for 15 or so years. At Meade, Larry lead the Green Wave to several Region Championships, including a 3A State Runner Up finish to Bell County in '91. Larry also had a stint at Lincoln County between his Meade and Boyle stops. He coached Lincoln County to a 5A State Semi appearance in '07. His son Steven won two state titles with his father at Boyle as an assistant. Steven is currently an assitant coach at 6A Central Hardin.

The Clayton's of Western Kentucky are another. Most know Craig, who was the longtime head coach at Hoptown and coached the Tigers to several region and semi final appearances, as well as to the '97 3A State Final game. But, Craigs late father is a legend in WKY, too. His dad was the head coach of Caldwell County's first State Championship team in '64.

The Goble's of WKY, too. Dan and Rusty Goble. Dan Goble (the elder) was the long time coach at Christian County and coached their '85 state title team. Dan's son, Rusty, is currently an assistant at Christian County where he has been on their '08 and '10 Runner Up teams

When did his brother Roy coach in the finals? Beechwood?

Dan Goble from WKy coached with Roy Lucas Sr at Lloyd Memorial High School in the late 60's I played for both and they are great coaches and teachers and I will always remember the two of them. JD

Yes, he was an assistant coach for 3 (I am 99.9% sure that it's 3) State Titles at Beechwood in the early to mid 90's.

I thought Roy coaced at Beechwood but the memory is foggy.

He Roy Jr was at Beechwood, Simon Kenton, Newport, Lloyd, Campbell and now SK again. I also think he may have coached down in Ashland area with his father also. JD

Yes, he helped at Greenup County and also was an Assistant for his dad at Washington Court House (OH). He also worked on the staff at West Virginia Tech for a year.

He has coached Lions, Tigers and Bears, oh my! LOL

interesting side note. In 1966 Roy Lucas, Dan Goble, Boyd Phillips, Fred Bernier made up the youngest coaching staff in the Commonwealth. That group was together until 1969, when Dan Goble went to Shelby County and fred Bernier went to Mt. healthy in Cincinnati with the legendary Owen hauck. A year later Roy Lucas and Boyd Phillips went to Maimi Trrace HS in Washington Court house Ohio and in 2 years had the schools first undefeated footbal team. Small world.
