Highlands defense

Featured Replies

Who are the leaders on Highlands' defense this year? Could someone post the Highlands defensive starters? How much subbing does Highlands do on defense? What is considered to be the main strength of the HHS defense?

The "strength' of Highlands defense is easy: Coach Brian Weinrich...period.

Their defense is very good. They have improved drastically against the run and pass. They aren't real big, but they fly to the ball and gang tackle on almost every play. They did get beat up by the run against Boyle in the first half of their first game. Since then, they were pretty solid until they ran up against Elder. Elder was HUGE and they had a huge punishing running back with a huge punishing fullback in front of him. They ran all over them, but HHS still contolled 3 qtrs of that game. They will struggle against anyone with that size because they aren't very big. The problem for other teams they will see the rest of the year, no one will have the size and athletes that Elder had. Their pass defense has also improved drastically. Early in the season, I was very worried about their pass defense. They have definitely got that straightened out. Overall, they are pretty solid. Plus their offense scores 50 a game and they do it in a hurry. Some think HHS's defense is their weakness this year. Well when your defense is out there all the time because your offense scores so fast, that makes you suseptible to scores!

Defense is ready for the run. Pass Defense is good. Run offense is exceptional. Pass offense has been established and is quite effective. The Birds have some outstanding receivers.

The run defense is not very good they have been playing alot of younger underclassmen.

Strength of defense is speed and technique

Because you've seen them play??? Scott Co runs all over SK and SC didn't even have a first down in the first half against HHS and you say their run defense is not very good. Hilarious!!!! Like I said before, statistically, HHS may not look good. Two reasons...1) their offense scores so fast that their defense is constantly on the field. 2) Their second and third teams play most of the second half in every game. You see the final numbers, not the numbers when it matters. Take away Elder (because there is NO ONE IN THE STATE that POUNDS the ball like them) and the only running that was done against us was in the first half of the first game against Boyle. HHS made adjustments at halftime and the run defense has been great since. Plus Boyle was tricky! They faked me out in the stands on several plays!

Thanks for posting this! So, does Highlands only play with 2 down linemen? Is that typical for HHS or is this something different this year?

They rotate a lot of different kids at the NT and DT positions..They usually play with 3 down lineman..

Not this year they haven't. The first team D, excluding the Ryle game, has primarily played a 2 man D line this year. They went back to a 3 man line against Ryle.

How did that SC game turn out for your team?

Obviously you didn't see the Elder game or you'd understand why. They are huge and are built to run it down everyone's throat. They also ran it down Moeller's throat and the rest of the GCL! Even with all the running, HHS controlled that game for 3 qtrs. With the exception of a late interception to turn the game in Elder's favor, they were beat. It was an outstanding play, but up until then the Elder faithful were VERY nervous and the feeling was HHS was in control. Trust me, I was sitting right in the middle of them! Interception was a huge momentum changer. Then Elder scored with under a minute to go to make the score look a lot worse than it really was.

As for Holmes, apparently they didn't run it too good. Did you see the score? If they had a running game, it would have kept HHS offense off the field. Don't look at the game stats, come see them play more often.
