Not true at all. How about the millions upon millions of us in the workforce that aren't employed by union jobs? We seem to be doing well enough without them.

Union jobs create a competitive workforce. Unions are the driving force behind higher salaries. In order for companies that don't have a union workforce to compete for workers with a union workforce they have to offer the same packages that companies with a union offer. Or do you naively believe that companies wouldn't hire you for cheap labor and no benefits? Union jobs make the entire workforce competitive.

You're speaking in way too many sweeping generalizations. Union jobs don't have a lick to do with many industries. How do they impact my job at a private family held public accounting firm? How do they impact the accounting field in general? That's just one example. If it's an industry that has some companies that have unions, and others that don't, then yeah they have to be competitive. But let's not act like every job in America is driven by Union jobs. That's pure lunacy.

Labor driven jobs. My bad.

Labor driven jobs. My bad.

:thumb: Wanted to make sure you weren't saying they drove EVERY job. Didn't think you were, but had to check.

I should have been more clear. :D

If unions never existed in our history, we wouldn't be "doing well enough." Labor organizers decades upon decades ago laid the groundwork for the good-paying middle class jobs of today, because the "job creators" would be more than happy to have you spending scrip at the company store and going further in debt to the company, if they even paid you at all.

Yeah, protecting jobs and the middle class daily. Without unions you'd be making pennies. Probably minimum wage or a little higher. Without unions your employer wouldn't offer healthcare, salary increases, vacation packages, pension, 401k, etc. Without unions this country would be a 2 class country, the rich and the poor and you'd be poor just like the rest of us. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a union employee but your constant attacks on unions based on your uninformed opinion is a shining example of the elitism that ruins this country.

Wow, I've never been called an elitist before. Your opinions of unions and mine differ by 180 degrees and nothing you have said has changed my mind, nor is it likely to. Just because you think they hung the moon don't expect all of us to fall into line. I still believe that they are corrupt organizations that are more interested in maintaining their own power then doing good for society. The mess that is the Jefferson County School System is a prime example and 99.9% of that groups problems can be laid at the feet of the Jefferson County Teacher's Association.

I don't think all unions hung the moon. Far from it. Wayyyyy far from it. You sit on here and degrade unions every chance you get. The union I preside over is far from corrupt and feel free to call the 3 union employees who have been fired from Corning since I took over as president. One of which was my best friend who was one of the top mechanics in the plant who made a huge mistake so don't give me that crap about unions keeping everyone from getting fired because that is false too. You don't know jack about unions. It's not that I feel they hung the moon. I feel they can be unfairly villainized because of the actions of some corrupt unions. That's like me saying all corporations are corrupt because of Enron or Wall Street. You act as if all unions are corrupt and evil and yes, that makes me feel like you are an elitist because all labor union workers want is a fair share of the pie and unions ensure that labor workers fair share is received. And you base your opinion of unions on the Jefferson County Teacher's Association? That's like me hating all white people because a white person once used a racial epithet against my sister as a child.

And I will continue to degrade unions every chance I get. If they are so great how come they fear right to work laws? If they are so great how come when people have a choice their memberships decline? You have your opinion, I have mine. That's America.

Because right to work laws would allow companies to hire people at low wages and without benefits and would effectively ruin all the work unions have done. Companies would be able to pretty much do whatever they wanted to do to the labor force with little or no repercussion and there wouldn't be anything anyone can do about it. People cry about how the Chinese treat their people. It'd be the same over here without unions. It's American companies hiring the cheap Chinese labor. But keep on hating. It's America. You can do that. We're used to elitism in America at this point.

Wow! You might want to rethink that outragous statement.

The Chinese are working for American companies. Why should I rethink it? You're asking me to trust corporations that would be given free reign to cut corners to save costs? That's as naive as me believing things would stay the same at Corning without a union.

Just like some of us are getting used to the poor me I'm a victim mentality. If unions are so great then it really seems to me that people wouldn't have to be forced to join.

It's America. Folks have a choice when the job offer is extended. Folks know at Corning when they apply for the entry level job. They can say no when the job offer is extended. Nobody is making them do anything.
