I absolutely loathe Night.

Bahhhhh....that hurts. I think that book should be required reading, nationwide.

It's an essential reminder of how evil mankind can be, how bad things happen to good people, and how people can survive even in the worst conditions.

That's interesting, but I can see that. I couldn't put it down the first time, it kept me up at night reading it. On the other hand, the Russians are known for their bleakness and drudgery, which isn't exactly riveting.

You've got that right...

Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkein

Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank

To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee

The Legend of Bagger Vance, Steven Pressfield

Farenheit 451, Ray Bradbury

Not to say I wouldn't change a title or two next week, though.

It's a parable about the human condition, and it's kind of a poetic and uber-dramatic way of saying "be careful what you wish for..."

So great. If you haven't, check out Thomas Mann's version of the legend. Brilliant stuff.

Several people have said "To Kill A Mockingbird." That book is so great... I should have remembered it.

Excellent choice.

Decine and Fall of The Roman Empire

Main Street

An American Tragedy

Let Us Now Praise Famous Men

The Child Buyer

This is pretty much IMPOSSIBLE! I have 5 books by the same AUTHOR I feel are musts!

Leon Uris:

Trinity

Redemption

QBVII

Exodus

Mila18

And that's only my favorite five of his!

I have a personal library, and I couldn't part with a single one of them, let alone decide only only 5 to recommend.

I've never even heard of that guy. Tell me more.

But come on, don't be chicken. Lets hear the five.

Here: Leon Uris

His works are absolutely extraordinary. Those I listed above are all historical fiction. Trinity & Redemption are about Ireland, specifically the Catholic/Protestant conflict from the beginning.

Exodus is about the creation of Israel

QBVII is about a former Nazi war criminal living in England who is discovered and faces trial in the English Courts. Absolutely fascinating in terms of learning about the English legal system.

Mila18 is set in the Warsaw ghetto.

I'm not joking. He was an extraordinary author. His novels bring history to life.

As to The Five:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn-Betty Smith

The Art of Racing in the Rain-Garth Stein

Hawaii-James Michener

Trinity/Redemption (can't read one without the other. :D)-Leon Uris

Pillars of the Earth/Where the World Ends (see Trinity/Redemption)-Ken Follett
