Conner 20 Beechwood 14 (JV)

Here is your game report:

Conner had two solid drives in the 1st quarter and Beechwood had one 3 and out possession. Beechwood stopped the Cougars on downs at the 25 on their first drive. On the Cougars second drive the Cougars scored first with just 56 seconds to go in the quarter on a 2 yard TD run on 4th down. The XP was no good, 6-0 Cougars.

The Tigers scored on the first play of the second quarter on a 58 TD pass from Spahn to Hayden. Burns' XP was good and it was 7-6 Tigers with 9:50 left in the quarter. The Tigers Chase Bright intercepted an ill advised pass under pressure on the Cougars' 3rd down play. The Tigers had it at the 35 and moved quickly down field. On 3rd and goal at the 1 there was a mixup on the handoff and the Tigers fumbled it back to the Cougars. Conner then went 99 yards converting several 3rd and longs and then scoring on a 4th and 8 pass from Martin to Postel. Martin ran in the 2 point conversion and the score was 14-8 Conner with 25 seconds left in the half.

Beechwood fumbled on their second play of the second half. Hughes picked up the loose ball and returned it to the 33. The Tigers stopped them on downs. Both teams put short drives together on their next possessions but were stopped on downs and the 3rd quarter ended with the score still 14-7 Cougars.

On their first drive of the 4th quarter the Tigers went from the 37 down the field and scored on a 13 yard touchdown run by Joe Studer. Burns XP tied the game at 14 with 3:46 to go. A good return by the Cougars' Hutchinson got the ball to the 50. The Tigers' Burns made a nice interception undercutting a route the Cougars had run twice successfully earlier in the game on key plays. Good read and play by Burns and the Tigers had it at the 35. The Tigers had a nice run for a first down but were then stopped on downs at the Cougars 37 with 1:16 to go. The Cougars struggled on a couple plays then took a shot down field. They threw a pass up for grabs and the Cougars receiver Evans came down with it at the 7 with 31 seconds to go. Two running plays went no where so the Cougars QB Martin threw a pass to Wilson and he was tackled out of bounds right at the pylon. The official ruled it a TD and with 8 seconds left, the Cougars led 20-14 after the XP try hit the crossbar.

Final score Cougars 20 Tigers 14.

That grey haired guy with the striped shirt had a great game for the cougars! Especially on that last drive. No holding call when the jersey is being pulled down over the shoulder pad. No offensive pass interference with the receiver pushing the defensive back out of the play on the long pass. Sheer incompetence!

Great stuff Eye!

Some people just can't take a loss, suck it up your team was beat....no ref issue the cougars just got it done in the end.

Grey haired ref missed 2 different blocks in the back by Conner players which occured right in front of him. When Beechwood knocked a Conner runner out of bounds, he ran up to where the ball went out rather than watching the play to conclusion. If roughing had occured, he would have had his back to it. He truly needs a lot of work. The last drive by Conner involved some fine passing and excellent pass blocking.

Were you at the game? The Conner fans around me agreed he pushed the defender away. If Conner doesn't get that play, it goes to overtime. In overtime the teams could earn it instead of a ref not just getting it done.

On a positive note the Tigers are making close games with big schools with a handful of juniors (5) and the rest sophomores playing the entire roster of players present. That will have to help them in the future.

I was really surprised when the Tigers kicked the extra point to tie the game. The normal holder for place kicking, Casey Erdman, was out with an injury. During the timeout after the TD, Casey was showing Joe Studer how to catch and place the ball down. Snap by Mahorney, catch and place by Studer. Great job by all.

I was not at the game, but spoke to several BW and Conner folks later in the day, both sides said the officiating was horrible, would have rather seen the game go to OT vs. being decided by a ref who was obviously incompetent or was just wanting to get the game over with. The state of officiating in NKY is in a state of great decline, have seen 5 freshmen games and 4 JV games, and lets just say on a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate the average at about a 2....not good.

I would have to agree that officiating is in decline. It isn't the judgment calls because those are always up for debate. I have seen simple mistakes and obvious calls/missed calls that I would not expect from pee wee officials. Running clocks when they shouldn't. Holding calls that are blatantly obvious in open field with jerseys nearly pulled off of players but no call. Ball spots that are off by several yards. I think officiating is down.

I am not one to complain about officials, but I have to agree with the posters above on the no call on offensive pass interference on the last second pass. The Conner fans I spoke with also said they thought it was clearly offensive pass interference and a terrible no call. Conner may still have won the game in overtime but that was poor officiating.

I competely agree with you, I dont want to complain about the officials, but my feeling is that if you are being paid to do your job, do your job to the best of your ability. Last year I had an official tell me before an early Saturday game, "Long night last night, didn't get to bed till after 3, need to get this one over with". I feel like the freshmen and JV games are looked upon as not being important, but it is important to the participants and the folks in the stands.

There were bad calls on both sides, there was a pass interference as well as a late hit that was not called on beechwood, but you don't mention those. I have been to twelve high school football games for the 2012 season and there have been bad calls all the way around. If you are seeing all these missed calls why don't you ref a few games?

My guess is that he has a JOB that gets paid to do well. These are not Volunteers. They make good money to Ref these games and they should work harder and make a better attempt to do it right. Why don't you Ref since you just pointed out that it was bad all the way around? It's interesting that in your first post you say there was no Ref Issue, but then later you say that there were bad calls on both sides. So which is it?

Most people in this thread are referencing things in general and are saying that things are bad across the board. That no-call on the pass interference was not a mere push off. The receiver completely extended both arms and shoved the defender away. It was one of the worst non-calls I have seen in a long time at any level. When you have more than 4 or 5 fans from the opposing team agreeing with you, it's a bad call/no-call.

All Refs/Umps makes mistakes, but nobody could defend that guy. He was disinterested in the game and was clearly just there for the money. Hopefully he will read this thread and either get interested or get out of the game. It's not fair to any of the kids.

To clarify there were no more ref issues in this game than any other game I have seen. I am not defending this ref missing a call but I am pointing out that missed calls went both ways and the previous post were only in reference to missed calls that hurt Beechwood. Good ref's do seem to be on the decline however if you are going to post about the ref's lacking in calls then let's be honest and state that the missed calls hurt both teams. If Beechwood had come out on top instead of Conner would the post have even went up?

I'd be interested in hearing about the calls you are talking about. There was one pass interference I can recall that that wasn't called on Beechwood. Happened to be on the Conner sideline so the same guy. He did call a very questionable call on Erdman with very little contact, then on the Beechwood side of the field late in the game the Conner player tackled Talley with no call.
