August 8, 201214 yr OK. So this discussion isn't for you. I'm curious to hear from those that are against it and/or who believe that God may indeed punish us to straighten us out. I'm no scripture expert so I will see what those that are have to add. Clyde, I know from your posting history that you love to read. Why don't you read the Bible?
August 8, 201214 yr Author Clyde, I know from your posting history that you love to read. Why don't you read the Bible? Fair question. No good answer.
August 8, 201214 yr Obviously, the two are very different in method. The CEO of Chick-Fil-A forced no one to hear his message, not even those that choose to walk in the door as customers. Westboro forces mourners at funerals to hear and see their hate. As to the message, I'll take UKMF's interpretation that Westboro Baptist church believes that God is murdering our soldiers as a direct result of people being gay or gay marriage being acceptable by some. However, the sentence that is very questionable in the statement made by the Chick-Fil-A CEO, "I think we are inviting God's judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him..." does not seem as if he believes that those that support gay marriage will be punished, but our whole nation will be punished. Perhaps it is poor wording on his part. I will say that that is the one line of his statement that bothered me. I don't believe that God will punish spindoc, who doesn't believe in gay marriage, just because UKMF doesn't believe gay marriage is wrong.
August 8, 201214 yr Clyde, I know from your posting history that you love to read. Why don't you read the Bible? I know that you didn't ask the question of me, but here is the issue that I struggle with in reading the Bible. I do not believe in a literal interpretation of the Bible. That will not change. I know that parts of Leviticus call for some pretty insane things as being permissable, such as slavery, which we all now believe to be biblically wrong. Why then does Leviticus get quoted so much for those teachings on homosexuality? Another question - where in the Bible do I find God's definition of marriage? Perhaps this is all for another thread, but these are things that I've been thinking a great deal about lately. I'm missing Alabama Larry, because he'd have some scriptures for me to read and consider.

He says we are inviting God's judgement. I say God is always judging so that makes me wonder if there is something more to his use of the term.
August 8, 201214 yr So you can see how that line caught my attention. He says we are inviting God's judgement. I say God is always judging so that makes me wonder if there is something more to his use of the term. Yes. As I said, I was pretty non-commital on his statement in general, except for that one part. I hope that he just worded it poorly. I am interested in hearing what some of the Chick-Fil-A supporters thinks that he meant about that part of his statement.
August 8, 201214 yr Author What does God's discipline look like as it relates to scripture? Could it include death?

I'm missing Alabama Larry, because he'd have some scriptures for me to read and consider. [h=2](Ephesians 5:21-32)[/h] .21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ 22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her; 26 that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body. 31 For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each individual among you also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respect her husband.
August 8, 201214 yr What does God's discipline look like as it relates to scripture? Could it include death? Doesn't Bible tell us the wages of sin is death?
August 8, 201214 yr Author Doesn't Bible tell us the wages of sin is death? Could God send a signal to us by taking the life of your child or my child today? Is he capable of that?
August 8, 201214 yr Could God send a signal to us by taking the life of your child or my child today? Is he capable of that? Children die all the time. I wouldn't say that it's a punishment from God when that happens.
August 8, 201214 yr Author Children die all the time. I wouldn't say that it's a punishment from God when that happens. I am asking you if there is scripture that can be interpreted that God will use death today in order for us to learn to change our ways?
August 8, 201214 yr I am asking you if there is scripture that can be interpreted that God will use death today in order for us to learn to change our ways? I don't know of any scriptures that say "Thou shall not commit adultery, or I will strike you dead"
August 8, 201214 yr Sure they're saying the same thing. It's all in the timing, location and delivery. People were against various wars. The funerals of fallen soldiers were not where you pointed that out. Those who did lost much support from even people who agreed with their views.
August 8, 201214 yr Author I don't know of any scriptures that say "Thou shall not commit adultery, or I will strike you dead" Can I assume the scripture is more subtle than that?
