Don’t Crucify the Marlins for Making Smart Moves

Featured Replies

I haven't read the link yet, but I think it's a decent deal. If the Marlins think Ramirez isn't going to regain his form of 2007-10, it's a good move by ridding themselves of the salary.

One wonders, given the quick decline ... could Ramirez be one of those Dominicans who are a little older than they're supposed to be?

The history the Marlins have in selling off their team is the #1 reason this is drawing so much fire now. Whether it is smart or not can never be determined until you see how everyone pans out, but the past is making people think this is the same ole Marlins with a new look.

While I agree with you. Check out the article and the author addresses this.

It basically says that it isn't a fire sale YET. It all depends on what the team does with the money saved. Ultimately his opinion means nothing. How the Miami fans view the moves are all that matter. If they feel as though they were sold a bill of goods by Loria they will stay away in droves. They have a very tepid fanbase as it is, this certainly won't help in that regard.

They're still committed to Reyes' contract and reportedly say he's untouchable, although I can't imagine there is a long line to take that deal at this point. Winning cures a lot of ills, and if the Marlins hit on the two young pitchers, the trades will be viewed as great moves.

...and so far nothing has indicated it is. Just baseball moves.

Sounds like GT and Jim need to go job hunting. :sssh:

It is all going to come down to how the fans view it. That is not a very dedicated group of fans. If they see these moves as a fire sale...and there is a great chance that they will--especially if they move Johnson or Nolasco. Then it could hurt attendance to the point where they can't afford the payroll level that they had this season. It will be crucial that they make some moves this offseason that reassure their fans that they intend to be a perennial contender.

I'd read it already at that point, I just think it's more a driving factor of the average fan being down on the Marlins for it, even if there were in his mind good reasons (or at least not so bad) for them.

Interesting point & one that I had not considered before reading your post.

The problem with shedding salary for the future is that this offseason's free agents are very underwhelming.

Ortiz has talked about coming to the NL, but he needs to be able to DH. BJ Upton is a free agent, but he's not a franchise type player. Greinke will be the most sought after pitcher.

I do agree with that. Not a particularly strong class. But still some pieces they could use. I just HOPE they stay out of the Josh Hamilton race.

Good call with Hamilton, I forgot about him.

Brian McCann & Delmon Young are both FA's too, which could attract some interest.
