I would be so glad if the Bulls don't retain Asik

I'm curious on the Eric Gordon New Orleans situation. If a team offers him a max contract do they match that? I understand you don't want to lose him but is that a great idea to make him a max player?

 

To me max deals only go to those select guys that warrent it. But of course there aren't a ton of those guys out there so it doesn't usually go that way.

 

If you are NO you have to match IMO, have to. I understand what you are saying but in today's NBA if you want to keep your players or sign free agents you have to pay for them, they don't come cheap. If NO feels that they can turn Rivers into their PG, and obviously they do, then they have to pony up and pay for Gordon. Davis and Rivers wouldn't really be eligible for big deals until about four more years so they will have the money to work with, big reason why they made the Ariza/Okafor trade, to clear cap. If they let Gordon walk who else are they going to sign with all that cap space? Furthermore, why even make the Chris Paul trade if all you end up with in the end is Aminu, Kaman (possibly), and Rivers?

 

With that said I kind of like the Rivers pick for them. I think they plan on trying to turn him into a PG (don't see how that will fair considering he's not really a pass first kind of guy), but if something happened and they weren't able to keep Gordon they may still have that scorer at the 2 guard to replace him with. So you get a quality pick and an insurance pick all in one. Hats off to Dell Demps and co.

I understand the logic completely, I just have a fundamental problem with max contracts going to "borderline" stars.

Signing CP3 to a max contract, I get that. Signing LBJ or Wade or (insert star's name here) I get that. Signing Granger to one, I don't like.

To make sure I'm not coming off like an idiot, I'll say again I understand why they will make the max deal, I just don't like it.

A max deal sounds crazy buts it's not nearly what it used to be.

A max deal doesn't necisarily mean the 16 or 17 million that Miami's 3 signed for, or the 20+ Joe Johnson or Kobe's deals are for. A max deal is actually different for each player depending on contract, how long they've been with the team, how long they've been in the league, etc. So in otherwords just because somebody signs a max deal doesn't mean it's in the 20 mil a year range, it could still just be a deal of only around 12-13 mil and still be considered a max deal. Max deal is different for every player.

Exactly, they settle, because maybe they have to settle. This isn't about Gordon, it's more about the system as a whole. Having said that I love the NBA system compared to the MLB one where small market teams are really in a different class.

Yeah the NBA really makes it to where teams who draft a player have an advantage in keeping them around. They have the abilityLike to offer more money and more years on a deal. Like I said, I agree with your notion its stomach turning that some of these guys make so much, but the NBA is a business like anything else, you have to do what you got to do. They have the money available so no sense to let your prize from the CP3 deal walk after only a handful of games. A Hornets team with Eric Gordon is certainty a much better team than a team without him and 12-14 million dollars more cap flexibility.

True, but eventually you are going to want to have Rivers and Gordon on the floor at the same time. Would be in their best interests to go ahead and try and get Rivers some run at the point.
