Ok I take my post back. I still wouldn't think Oliverio is the best player on her team. Why have an award that everyone is not eligible for.

 

I agree, everyone in region should be eligible. But since they have to be members, all the coaches at the schools have to do is pay $30 for themselves and $15 for the assistant coaches and they have the opportunity to nominate whomever they'd like. They also get to vote each week on Top 25 in state. They also get the chance to become coach of Junior/Senior East/West All Stars each year too. There's other perks but if I was coach, those are the main ones that would grab me. Along with spreading the wealth around to other coaches....

If all teams eligible I'd have to nominate NDA's coach this year. Joe has done a fantastic job with the team and I personally know he's an outstanding coach. Daughter enjoyed playing basketball for him

We need Blue grass preps awards, we would have to do better than the coaches and the enquier. I haven't seen many teams this year but I bet I could still get it closer than most coaches.

 

It is a flat out joke if you ask me. I am sure Patti Oliverio is one of the better coaches and is deserving but seems even though they won the Region they are having some major problems and I am sure its not all the parents fault. How about Beechwood's coach, NDA, Dixie they are all deserving. As far as her daughter I would be surprised if she was the best player on her team.

 

I wasn't really that surprised by the coach of the year choice, but the three you mentioned are all very deserving if they were members of the KSCA. I really like all three but my choice would have been between Beechwood and Dixie.

Congrats to all, the Stephens name is one I haven't heard of before. Any info on her as far as grade, position, etc?

 

Ryle had 4 players voted all region and Smith was not one, did she have an off tourney?

 

Katelyn Stephens is sophomore outfielder, 1st year as starter. Nice bat. Nice tournament, but knocking in the winning run with 2 strikes, 2 outs, bottom of the final inning of the regional championship game certainly helped get her the MVP. And good for her! I thought the other 3 picks from Ryle were well deserved, but I would not have been surprised for Smith to be there in place of one of the others. It's subjective.

 

Re: coach of the year - maybe the whole point is that Ryle had a rocky year, lost a couple of excellent players and STILL pulled out the 9th region crown. I am guessing good coaching had something to do with that?

I am sure she was deserving, Ryle is the elite program in the area. I am sure their coach has a lot to with it. That being said I would have still voted another way but I am ok with her being the coach of the year.

Regarding the KSCA regional Coach and Player of Year awards, I think Coach Oliverio would be in the mix but my pick would be the NDA or Beechwood coaches. As for POY award, I think the Oliverio girl is a solid player; however I could justify a case for at least 5-10 others that would be more deserving this year. The limitations on who could only be considered based on membership may serve well in other parts of KY, but the small existing 9th/10th region group makes it a little too biased. That’s just my opinion but I still extend congratulations to both Oliverios.

Since there has been a lot of frustration and opinion over regional, state, tournament, and various all-star teams. I thought I would throw this interesting tidbit out there. Heard this recently a couple weeks ago and then had it confirmed at the 9th Region tourney by three separate coaches and two AD’s. Apparently during the recent NKY Coaches Association awards (2nd year for this association) there was quite a bit of frustration and disappointment over how the balloting was handled. Some coaches just didn’t reply to the requested nomination e-mail while there were several schools who misunderstood the request for nominations (POY, 1st & 2nd teams, & hon-mention) because it included a request for scholarship info also. Several schools appealed to the association administrators (2-3 local coaches) when realizing they overlooked the ballot part. Even though the appeals for a recast were over ten days to two weeks before the actual presentation (5/29), they were told no, and their ballots were not accepted. As a result, several good teams and some of the area’s top players were not represented. Several players left off the ballot were on the 1st/2nd team awards from the year before. Shame on those coaches who were too lazy to reply; and shame on the association administrators for not being more reasonable in realizing multiple coaches did not understand the e-mail and tried to correct the misunderstanding. What purpose does this serve other than to weaken the overall ballot and penalize kids who were just as deserving or possibly more deserving? Having said that, I’m sure there were some very deserving kids who were on the ballot and did receive awards; and I’m happy for them. The James girl (Dixie HS) certainly would have been in my top player pool consideration. It would be interesting to see the final team selections and know who was actually represented (or not) on the ballot itself. Anyone have this?

And some people don't think we have a problem with coaches in the area. What a joke...I would bet my pay check that Holy Cross is one of the schools that didn't do it. Doesn't really matter for my daughter bc she missed to many games and after she hit .603 with 9 homers last year and did not receive anything we don't expect anything. How hard is it to go for bat for your players, how long does it take to send an email.

I think that's correct I agree with 9 of them but wony say which one I dont. Some schools may not have attended required meetings or paid dues. Everyone likes to bash Nell Fookes and Patti but they just keep winning. Isn't the ultimate goal to win at the end? If so they do it well

Kids looking for playing time should send kids to smaller private schools, such as Heritage, Villa, Calvary etc. At least through there 6th-8th grades they could play varsity while in middle school, and transfer back during there high school years. Heritage had a decent season, finishing 12-16 with losing close games with Dixie, and Lloyd (district) was closer than final indicated as it was a 1 run game going into 5th...
