Hats off and good luck to Ludlow as they advance to play Dixie tomorrow.

 

However....... Whoever scheduled the Uncle of Ludlow's SS to be the Ump behind the plate....to be an Ump at this game, at all......really made a mistake. In any game, especially a District game? At Dixie, they announced players, coaches and Umps names......Same last name SS and Ump behind the plate.

 

Top of the seventh with 1 on and one out. Villa batting. Calls 3 straight balls, then calls one of the highest strikes I have ever seen.....OK, OK, 3-0, the batter is taking all the way, call a strike. The next pitch is even higher and strike two......our batter says it was in his eyes, and the Ump tells him to say another word and he is gone.......He puts his head down, starts to dig in, and the Ump runs him because, his words, not mine, "I saw it in your eyes that you wanted to say something" and he runs him.....Villa's pitcher, who was 2 for 3 in the game. Didn't say a word, just looked at him.

 

Coach Sawyer comes out and is "banned to the dugout" because he asked about the relationship to the SS.......I guess it was supposed to be a secret.

 

Other questionable calls....

 

Villa runner called out at home, clearly under the tag.....(I was in the first row)

Ludlow hitter takes a half swing, ball goes off his bat, and the ump from behind the batter's back, calls a hit batsman. Batter was resetting himself for the next pitch. Surprise to him also.

Ludlow batters with their back foot behind home plate.....V coaches pointed it out and the Ump behind the plate refused to acknowledge it.

 

Again, doesn't mean that Villa would have won, but they were playing one of the best games of the their season and at least had a chance until some of the calls seemed to take the wind out of the sails.

 

 

After the game, the UMP was escorted to the changing room at Dixie by a Ludlow parent.....His brother.

 

Again, whoever scheduled the Umping crew, and the fact that the Ump did not excuse himself, Big, Big mistakes.

Understand the V coaches protested the one Ump.....other two seemed to be pretty good.....Heard one Coach say they were told that the one in question will not be doing any more games.

Agreed......just don't know why someone would put themselves in that position.

Do you know for an absolute fact that the umpire was the shortstop's uncle or did they just have the same last name? If truly related, the assignor for the 9th Region made a serious mistake.

FACT.......Coach Sawyer from Villa actually teaches at Ludlow. SS is a Sophomore at Ludlow. Not that he did anything wrong. He actually played a nice game.

 

Not going to mention name of the UMP here, but you can figure it out ....Riherd's scoreboard lists rosters.

 

The assignor may have made a mistake and not checked rosters, but what UMP knows he is related to a player and doesn't excuse himself. 95% of this is on the UMP....5% on the assignor in my opinion. There were 3 umps there. Both Coaches would have agreed to role with 2 if he excuses himself.

While I agree with some of the questionable calls, I will say with 100% certainty that the umpire was not escorted by a Lidlow parent to the changing room. And Villa's coach was not restricted for anything he said. He was restricted because he kicked dirt on the plate to cover it.

Sure looked like a Ludlow hat when they went past the dugout and out the gate.....apologies if I and the other 10 that saw it are mistaken. Coach specifically told me he was banned and why........then covered the plate......and made comment about the lights.

 

 

It is a shame......both teams played very well. It was an exciting game. May have been Villa's best game of the year. Ludlow's pitcher threw a very nice complete game and finished it out strong. Ludlow and Villa hit the ball hard. Ludlow triple and double back to back with a tied game....and yet this is what we are talking about.

Surprised this kind of thing does not happen much more frequently. Lived in beautiful Northern Kentucky for 6 years. One thing I have learned is that there are some big family trees here with deep roots, and lots of people related.

It was the Dixie AD, the Dixie trainer and two Dixie coaches that walked him and the rest of his crew to the changing room as Villa parents yelled at him fro the stands.

It's my experience that the losing team usually has the biggest issue with the officials/umpires. I get that. Happens. Officials/umpires know to expect it. No school owns the monopoly on that.

I've lived through 3 teenagers. Nothing new to me.

I haven't seen one person that said it was alright. Should he have been assigned to another district (had the assignor known about the relationship)?Most likely. Do I think that he changed the outcome of the game? No.

 

Villa missed an opportunity to score when a runner failed to tag from third on a fly ball to CF. Villa also got outsmarted when Ludlow called a pitch out when the squeeze was on. Villa pitcher #2 shouldn't have been taken out off the mound. High chopper right over the mound with 2 outs and runner on third that the SS couldn't come up with.
