Do the Reds have the best pen???

Recommended Posts

The Reds bullpen has been lights out, and possibly may be the best pen in the bigs.

Redlegs Bullpen Stats:

6-4, 2.41ERA, 5saves, 78.1IP, 56H, 21ER, 6HR, 36BB. Opponents are hitting an even .200 and their WHIP is 1.17

The Big 4:

Arredondo: 2-0, 2.13ERA, 12.2IP, 8H, 3ER, 9BB, 14SO, .186AVE.

(Finally mastered his nasty splitter and increased his fb velocity)

Ondrusek: 2-0, 0.00ERA, 12.0IP, 6H, 0ER, 5BB, 10SO, .146AVE.

(Flat out nasty, he was throwing 97 last night and is very tall)

Chapman: 2-0, 0.00ERA, 14.2IP, 5H, 0ER, 4BB, 25SO, .102AVE.

(Amazing, almost 2Ks an inning and better control of his pitches)

Marshall: 0-2, 4.82ERA, 9.1IP, 10H, 5ER, 3BB, 12SO, .270AVE. 5saves

(A bad outing or two but he is also not a closer and I for one thought he would be hammered worse than he has)

Simon has 12 SO in 10.2IP, and a 2.53ERA. Hes turned out to be a very good pickup. Hoover has stepped in nicely also pitching 4.2 innings with 5 strike outs. When Masset and Bray get healthy this pen is going to be even better and have more depth. The Reds also signed Weurtz one of the best set up men just a season or two ago and Madson is out for the year...

I'm taking the Rangers and Yanks for sure (even with Mo's injury). I think it's worth noting that part of the Reds success in the pen is a direct detriment to their rotation...

They would still be in the top 10 ERA without Chapman.

...further proof it's foolish.

So you feel the better option is to start him now, and have him done with his innings limitations by August and finished for the year? See what happens in Washington when Strasburg is done before the playoff chase really begins...

I still think find some way to do it, possibly some mysterious injury a couple of times to the 15 day DL?

With the innings restrictions put in place by the organization, I think it is the only way to have him available for 6 months. Do you think it is best to only have him from April to early August as a starter and then nothing for the last 2 months???
