SSC, I think your statement here supports my argument that coaching is NOT the problem in NKY. You believe that the Beechwood coach is hands down the best in the area and the best she can do with the talent she has is lose 17-0 to possibly the worst NCC team since they started playing fast pitch. High School coaches play with the hand they are dealt, summer coaches get to discard and draw. Whole lot easier job.

 

Beechwood does not have talent to compete with most if any teams. You could have Mike Candrea and Sparky Anderson coach them, they would be better but not great.

 

I agree that HS coaches can only play with the hand they are dealt with, but they need to play the best hand possible. There are some good coaches in the area some ok coaches and some flat out bad coaches, overall we are lacking quailty coaching in this area.

I too respect your opinion, and I would rate Ryle, Conner, St. Henry, Highlands-some of the Newport coaches at a higher level, but lest all say that is all on winning-no it is not. I am curious SSC what you see from her that

Her having played the game at a very high level helps, but most all coaches in baseball/softball played the game some are very good coaches some are not. As far as what I see from her I guess most would be the things I see her working with the kids in pregame. I have been to a lot of college camps and am lucky enough to see a lot or really high level ball in the summer, and from what I see she does it as close to those people as I have seen around here. Plus my guess would be that she pitches batting practice to the girls which in its self would be a huge plus. Pitching machines just don't cut it for me in softball. I have only seen a small sample of what she does good or bad but it would be enough for me if she wanted to come help our team.

I agree with Ryle, Conner and Highlands. Not so sure I agree with St. Henry, they just have some nice talent. As for Newport are you referring to Newport High School or NewCath, or both?

AGREE 100%, NewCath hits at 57 mph in practice and looks like "world-beaters", and then when it's live pitching alot of times can't hit their way out of a paper bag.

Here is the problem... unless you have 3-4 pitchers on your team that can throw bp "effectively" then you can't do live pitching. Soft toss and tee work have their place, but the pitching machine is the easiest way for batters to see pitches coming at them at a high rate of speed. Good hitters are effective using the pitching machine. I'm amazed that some "guru" somewhere said "pitching machines aren't effective" and people just jumped all over it. If they can hit off the machine and can't hit live pitching sounds to me like they are scared.

SSC - you hit the nail on the head concerning your comment on SH. Apparently Porky has also picked up on the problem there also.Thank heaven for those few kids who have not allowed the problem to take away their passion for the game. It's sad because they could have been so much more successful. As for Region 9, it looks wide open right now with Conner and Dixie playing above the rest at the start - JMO

Scared might not be the right word, maybe comfortable with the pitching machine. IMO, and only an opinion, hitting off the pitching machine is relaxed, the kids sit back and take good swings and live bp is the same to an extent. The problem is when the spotlight comes on and your facing a girl with a strange delivery, wildness, and between one day and the next you may see between a 10 and 15 mph speed difference those "good swings" go out the window and crazy things happen. I'm sorry, I have not seen a pitching machine yet that hits the same spot every time, my kid has been hit several times by either a machine or at a batting cage somewhere.

You pitch real softballs to that kid of yours from 20"? Good god man, I would be scared to throw marshmallows to her at 20".

Completely agree. Dixie IMO has one of the best all around coaching staffs in the 9th region, from head coach, assistant and JV coach and the freshman coach. Couldn't get much better in the 9th region and great facilities too.
