18 Years Ago Today...

Absolutely loved Nirvana when I was younger and I still like their stuff today. I was too young to have really been into them at the time Cobain died, but there's no doubt they were highly influential in my musical growth. Just this week I watched an old concert of theirs that aired on one of those music channels in deep cable. I still listen to Bleach and Nevermind from time to time.

Agree, I didn't and haven't lost any sleep over his passing. I'd rather listen to cats scratching a blackboard then anything from Nirvana.

Poor guy, you just dated yourself. My generation will always be indebted to them for taking away the market from hair bands.

Human beings have shown many resourceful ways of self-medicating away the pain of everyday life. I don't know many people who self-medicate with the intention of killing themselves -- at least not initially. Usually that's an accident, kind of like the heart attack most of this board is staring at in their near future (me included).

Maybe I'm not understanding the portion of your previous post, "But it's not like it was a calculated decision for each to allow their lives to spiral out of control." I think they most certainly did make a conscience decision to abuse their bodies knowing what the potential very well could be. Again, maybe I'm not grasping your point.

Nobody starts doing drugs with the mindset of intending to kill themselves anymore than someone eats a donut with the intent of killing themselves. That's what I mean by a calculated decision. Sure, those thoughts may be in the back of their mind that there is risk involved, but like anything else, they go in with the "I can quit any time I want" mindset.

Nobody grabs a needle and shoots up smack thinking, "One day, this will kill me. I can't wait."

Not a Hair Band guy and certainly Grunge guy. Nirvana, to me, sucked as badly as Winger or the other bans Jim mentioned.

That being said, I get what Jim is saying about the demons and trying to ease their pain. I have empathy for them. What I don't get is how some put these guys/gals on some weird pedestal once they've died from an overdose.

I don't know that it's necessarily that — in most cases of those who die too soon, it also has to do with the "what might have been" question. Probably not much different from the "In memory of" stickers people put in their back windows or the crosses on the highway to memorialize those who were taken from us before their time should have been up.

Granted, the clods who do things such as throw spent smack needles out the window on the lawn of Cobain's home don't put across the best image, but I'd still like to think they are still celebrating Cobain the musician moreso than Cobain the junkie.

It would, however, be funny if Elvis fans memorialized his gravesite with deep-fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, donuts and pills. Yes, I have a dark sense of humor.
