Are "Bounties" on opposing players or for huge hits condoned just because no money is involved?

 

Never being around a program that gives out helmet stickers I never really thought about this. Naive as I may have been about the stickers on HS helmets, I have talked to others that said stickers are handed out for many things that happen on the field. TD's, Picks, forced turnovers, recovered turnovers and yes Big Hits. Some schools that don't use helmet stickers I've heard have a board in the locker room where credit for big plays including big hits are recorded and kept track of through the season. One local school has a Big Hammer that is handed out to the player they "Lays the biggest hits" for that week.

 

So my question is what is so different from this and what happened in the NFL, except for the money?

Jumper where i played we were awarded helmet stickers for big plays, big hits and so on, but there was never any intent to injure anyone, that is the difference between what we got helmet awards for and what is happening in the NFL with the Saints.JMO.

I agree 100%. Rewarding for "Big Hits" does not mean that you are trying to hurt someone. They were being rewarded for "Cart Off's" and "Knock-Outs".

Thanks just wondering how most were handed out. I think it would be naive to think that there are not coaches out there at HS and NCAA level that do offer incentives for cart offs and injuries.

 

I know that a kid that was told to put a helmet on the chin of the opposing teams star player on the first play of the game if he had the ball or not. He did, blindsided the kid 20 yards away from the play, trying to knock him out of the game.

I'm interested to see where, if anywhere this thread goes. Didn't like the premise at first, but Jumper did a good job explaining it, and the more I thought about the more intrigued I've become.

Exaclty. Until they put ambulance and tombstone stickers on their helmets, I have no problem w/ big, clean, hits getting stickers if your team awards them. It's the intent. It is football, you are always looking for a huge hit to watch on film the next day and get your teammates going, while intimidating the other team. If you intend to injure someone...then there is something wrong w/ you.

That's bush league. I'm sure that there are coaches that tell their players to try and injure impact opponents. Those men should not be coaching. Those men are turds.

We put our lunch money in a pot for each game to see whom would get the most sacks in a game. If nobody got a sack, the pot rolled over. I don't understand why violence in the game, which the game is really based on at the end of the day, along with teamwork, is being legislated. The Saints coaches should've let this remain among players. But HS coaches, the ones I know will not allow a bounty system. We kept ours from our coach.

Coached High School Football for a long time. We used the Sticker System. Kids loved it, They would stand in line on Pre-

game day to receive those Stickers. Never felt like it led to any injuries. It did lead to some (Clean) Big Hit's.

That is why some stickers are given out for knocking someone out of game. We could give out stickers for Love Taps or Nice Take Downs but I doubt if the Players would want any.

That's a point I was trying to make in the New Orleans Saints threads. A sticker isn't money but it is a reward for a hit that may have hurt someone. People try to act like it's different but it isn't.

I agree, Football is a sport where we try to hit people and Hit them hard. End results sometimes people are going to get hurt. I see nothing wrong with being rewarded for a (clean) good Hit.

Going for "Big Hits" has led to horrible form on tackles. Everybody want to just throw a shoulder and try to decleat somebody rather than wrap up and make good tackles. Most GOOD teams don't put up with that and stress good wrap up tackles but some don't seem to care and it has led to poor tackling at all levels of football.
