Les Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Take notice this was done before Friday night's games: 1. South Laurel (11-1) What’s the scoop: Steve Wright’s South Laurel Cardinals continue to dominate their opponents. The Cardinals captured the Frank Spencer Holiday Classic on Thursday by defeating Archbishop Malloy, 65-53. The win gave South Laurel its 10th win in a row. Surprise, surprise: It’s no surprise junior guard Ty Proffitt captured tournament MVP honors with his 18-point performance against Archbishop Malloy on Thursday. Don’t be surprised to see Proffitt playing for a Division I school at the next level in 2008. The first Litkenhouse Ratings came out this week and the Cardinals are No. 1 in the state with a 101.6 rating. Who follows South Laurel in the 13th Region? Rival North Laurel comes in with a 74.7 mark. That’s almost a 27-point differential. What’s ahead: South Laurel will be off until Jan. 6 when the Cardinals will host 12th Region rival Wayne County. The Cardinals will be in action the following day in the Kentucky Prep Classic against Beechwood. 2. North Laurel (6-5) What’s the scoop: It’s amazing. For the first time in a long while, I actually have a team that has secured the No. 2 spot for more than one week. Despite the Jaguars’ dismal showing in the 5th/3rd Bank Classic last week, Jim Conway’s team remains in this spot for at least one more week. Surprise, surprise: I was really surprised to see North Laurel go 0-2 in the 5th/3rd Bank Classic. Yes, the Jaguars had tough games against Trinity and Ballard, but North Laurel’s 26 point loss to the Shamrocks was disappointing. What’s ahead: North Laurel will be off until Jan. 7 when the Jaguars will play in the Kentucky Prep Classic in Frankfort. North Laurel’s opponent will be Christian County, who is the fifth rated team in the 2nd Region. It doesn’t get any easier the following week, as the Jaguars will play Hazard in the first round of the WYMT Classic. 3. Barbourville (7-2) What’s the scoop - The Tigers showed how good of a team they are with their performance in the Cumberland Falls Invitational this past week. Surprise, surprise: Barbourville is going to be dangerous the entire season, but to contend for the 13th Region crown, having a healthy Matthew Cox in the lineup is a must. What’s ahead: Barbourville has a district showdown with Knox Central on Jan. 6. This game should be a barnburner. 4. Corbin (6-4) What’s the scoop: Despite their opening game loss in the Cumberland Falls Invitational, the Redhounds continue to improve. Surprise, surprise: Coach Tony Pietrowski is looking for some of his younger players to step up and Deke Barley has done just that. Barley averaged 7.5 points a game in the Redhounds’ first two games of the Cumberland Falls Invitational. What’s ahead: The Redhounds will travel to Middlesboro Tuesday and face-off against the 3-7 Yellow Jackets. Corbin will be back in action Jan. 6 against 50th District foe Whitley County. 5. Clay County (7-3) What’s the scoop: The Tigers posted a 2-1 record in the Berea Tournament this past week and survived a 60-55 contest with Jackson County on Dec. 22. Surprise, surprise: The Tigers’ 75-54 loss to Madison Southern in the Berea Tournament was an eye-catcher to me. North Laurel beat the Eagles by seven points at ‘The Jungle’, but then again, it was Madison Southern’s second game of the season. What’s ahead: Clay County will travel to Harlan Dec. 5 before hitting the road Jan. 10 to face Powell County - a team the Tigers beat 68-61 in the Berea Tournament. The Best of the Rest No. 6 Cawood (5-5) What’s the scoop: The Trojans are struggling and that’s an understatement. Cawood has lost four games in a row and will host Cumberland on Jan. 3. No. 7 Bell County (8-3) What’s the scoop: The Bobcats look very young to me. me. I know they do have an injury to Ryan Whitaker and that hurts. I have to go with Bell County at this spot because the Bobcats did beat Harlan by 13 points on the Green Dragons’ home floor earlier in the season. Bell County will host Middlesboro on Jan. 6. No. 8 Pineville (7-2) What’s the scoop: The Mountain Lions started the season 6-0 before losing to Louisville Eastern and Garrard County. Pineville will be in action Jan. 3 against Williamsburg. No. 9 Harlan (5-2) What’s the scoop: The Green Dragons didn’t participate in a holiday tournament and that could turn out to hurt them in the long run. Harlan will host Evarts on Jan. 2. No. 10 Lynn Camp (7-3) What’s the scoop: The Wildcats will be tested in the next two weeks with games against Pineville, Knox Central and Barbourville. Lynn Camp will host Red Bird on Jan. 3. ballaholic Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Les, Why would it hurt the dragons for not participating in a holiday tournament. I know they are playing in the WYMT tournament and they have the all a tournament. Throw in 10 district games, six SEKC games. It might be hard for a christmas tournament. They are playing in two tournaments if it is that big of a deal.

Better prepares you for your region games.
the villager Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Good list Les. :thumb: Even though I'm surprise that the Mountain Lions are still #8 after losing to a not so good Garrard County. But upsets will happen. It's odd to see three 51st District teams in the top 10.
4chs Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 1. South Laurel 2. Barbourville 3. North Laurel 4. Clay Co. 5. Harlan 6. Cawood 7. Corbin 8. Bell Co. 9. Pineville 10.Lynn Camp
HDE Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Harlan would have had to skip the WYMT to play in a holiday tournament. They don't have too many options with the six-team district they are stuck in for now. Ten district games are a lot. Harlan has trips to E-Town and PRP along with the WYMT and All "A" Classic. They also play most of the top teams in the 13th Region, with the obvious exception of South Laurel, so they have one of the tougher schedules in the region. The list looks good though, but I'd put Harlan higher and Pineville lower. Who has Pineville beat?
ukbellco14 Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 Right on IMO. I think at this point NL and Barbourville are interchangeable. SL continues to dominate and is the undisputed #1. I think Bell County is getting very little respect after beating PCC pretty handily, the same team Clay lost to by 1 point. I think the loss of Whitaker does hurt them though and if they had him back they could be a top 5 team (which is an accomplishment in and of itself considering several big time players didnt come out due to football). I think Corbin, Clay, and Cawood are all pretty much neck and neck at this point. Cawood had a nice run their for a while but is not playing well as of late. I think Harlan should be ahead of P'ville.... however that could be because P'ville has been the perennial doormat of this region, and not because they are playing worse then Harlan.

Better prepares you for your region games. HDE already said this but they have already been to E-town and later go to PRP how much more of a different style do they need to see? That is two teams that a lot of 13th region teams would never put on their schedule and teams would not see them at most of the tournaments they are in around here anyway. With the exception of SL/NL tournament and maybe Painstville tournament.
123456 Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 I seen the moutain top 10 last night...noticed it had South,Clay, and Bell from the 13th in it...NO NORTH!@ NO CORBIN! NO CAWOOD! I think you all need to start moving North down alittle and moving Bell and Clay up ..

Mastermind Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 The Falls seemed to have a definite "BLUE" feel to it this season. Bville seemed to get the breaks when they needed them. Corbin did not play well druing the tournament. Of course, they faced two of the best teams in the field .......Carolina Forest and Perry Central.

What happened to Perry Central in their game against Bell Co?
Mastermind Posted December 31, 2005 Posted December 31, 2005 If I recall correctly. Perry had a couple of players sick and those guys did not play against Bell. Perry seemed a bit jet lagged or bus droggy to open the game. Bell built a sizeable lead and was able to maintain it throughout.

I like your list Les other than one thing. In your list you described North Laurel's last performances as "dismal", "surprised" and "disappointing". After such a negative description how could you leave them #2? What will North have to do to fall out of the #2 spot? What will Bville have to do to move to #2, beat South?? I have a feeling frogs will fly before North goes to #3 on your list. I agree with the rest of your list though. :thumb:
