  1. Stayton, Geisen and Terry. None were standouts on JV, but they are working hard in the off season and seem to be improving alot. Stayton is smaller but has a nose for the ball, Geisen has good size but needs to work on his speed and Terry has put on about 20 lbs (now over 220) and deadlifted 335 on his max (he is not yet 16). So they are moving in the right direction and will play a role as they get deeper into the season. Depending on how the season goes, you may also see Frisch get a look on D Line. Anyway, the D Line is very deep and this group of upperclassmen seems to have a chip on their should after last season. Overall, the team as a whole has good size and the right attitude. Hopefully, Isler and Vansant will step up and be the leaders they seem to be. If so, it will be a good year for CovCath.
  2. You are right. Also, there are couple of good D lineman juniors-to-be that will be rotated into the playing time as the year progresses. As many have stated before, it is very hard for the sophs to break the lineup on the D Line at CovCath, mostly because of size, strength, maturity, agility issues and tradition. Over the past 3 years, the D Line has been the most consistant part of the team and have performed well regardless of the circumstances. If you saw the Blue/White game, you would have noticed that the sophs-to-be did not get many Varsity reps on the D Line. I can only remember a couple times they did and the O Line dominated them. The players mentioned above are and will be good players that is for sure, but unless something drastic happens, they will have to pay their dues like everyone else. Coach Brossart believes that the juniors and seniors have the right to prove themselves and he will give them the opportunity to do that. If they don't perform, then maybe things will change.
  3. He will start at one of the guard positions. He needs to work a little harder in the off season, but he has very good upper body strength and good feet. Keene will do well this year too. He is quick and has good speed. I believe he scored on a long run during the blue/white game. I think he will see a good amount of playing time, although Deters and Deglow will be the two primary backs. Both have good speed and run very hard. Isler will really suprise a lot of people. He is finally 100 % from the arm problem and is having a great year in baseball. I think that confidence will carry over to football. He could put up big numbers this year if the receivers hang on to the football, which I think they will. All-in-all, we should get to see some really top quality play from all of the teams in NKY. It should be a lot of fun.
  4. I hope they do. It should be a great game. It think you're right about the HC talent on offense, but winning on the JV level is not the only indication of how a team will do on the Varsity level. A team's off season program can make a big difference in how the season turns out, especially on the Varsity level and between the Soph and Jr year. I think HHS proves that theroy year in and year out. They have the best off season program in NKY and probably the most consistant success in NKY (along with Beechwood). I hope the HC kids are hard at it. It would be nice to see both CovCath and HC have a good year. Thanks for the info.
  5. Amen to that....I went to public school and I have done OK, but my kids go to Private/Catholic and I am glad they do. It is all about what you put into and I think the focus in Privates is on excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. Just my humble opinion.
  6. Take a look at the whole post. I am trying to get an idea of how they will match up with "bigger teams" (size of players) i.e. NC, BHS, Holmes and Ryle; all teams that both CovCath and HC play. I think everyone knows CovCath and HC have never played. My reference point is CovCath because my son plays there, but most of his friends go to HC. Like I said, I hope HC does great this year, but if they have not put on much size and strength up front, on both sides of the ball, it may be a tough year. This is a forum for discussion, I think my question is legit....I figure a person with a forum name like Nkysportsblog might catch on to that. I apologize for the confusion, I'll be more specific in subsequent post.
  7. From what I hear and have seen, the O-line hasn't gotten much bigger since last year. A team can have great skill players, but if they don't have holes to run thru and time to pass the ball, its irrelevant. If this is so, how will they compete with NC, BHS, and the bigger schools? I don't follow them too much, but the last I saw of them they looked small. Not picking on them, because I know a lot of them. It just seems the current sophs for NC, BHS and Dayton are huge comparatively. I know the current sohps for CovCath have put on some serious weight and size. These guys range from 6'0 to 6'5", 220 to 260 and are hitting the weights hard. I wish HC luck...they are all great kids.
  8. He may not be now, but he still has 3 seasons of football to play and he is probably the best athlete on the team. If you hooked him up with a good QB coach, he has the potential to be one of the best in No Ky by the time he is a senior. He has all of the tools...he's tall, smart, strong, has a very good arm, runs well and is a leader. That says QB to me.
  9. McGraw was the best player on the floor. Is he a Senior? If so, is he getting any looks? Simpson is guick to the hoop, but has a bad touch. This is the first time I've seen Highlands play. They play great man-to-man D, especially on the perimeter. With the exception of McGraw, they don't really shoot very well. Cov Cath felt the pressure from Highland's D, but they found a way to score, mostly within 15'. I was very impressed with the way the entire team handled the ball and the guards, although small, took the ball strong to the basket. Maile and Grimes are studs on the boards. CCH is the only team in NKY that can match up Holmes, but that is going to take a much better shooting effort than they had tonight. It should be a great game. I don't mean to look past St. Henry, but CCH should have a much eaiser time getting open looks from the outside than they did tonight (look for them to light it up) and St. Henry has no answer on the inside for Maile and Grimes. How about those Crazies....
  10. By 2010, I meant 2009-2010. Next year should be interesting, but there still is a lot of work to do. If the current sophs step up and play well as jrs, then it will be much better. Although, the class of 2010 has not won much, they are a close group of boys and they are going to be really big. Many of them are already in the 200-220 lbs range and are good athletes. They just need to start beliveing in themselves. CCH also has a good off season program and after HHS, will be one of the best conditioned teams in NKY. There are also a number of good freshman and they should add much to the program in the next couple of years. Anyway, this is supposed to be about the HHS and BG game, so I'll stop there and let these two teams enjoy the spotlight. I hope all going to the game have a safe trip.
  11. BGHS has recently had a lot D1 talent but fails to win the big games. That is because they don't play a strong schedule during the year. After seeing them against CCH, in the 2007 State Championship, the did not appear very disciplined and folded early in the game. Last year they had no less than 5 D1 players and CCH had the game in hand after the 1st quarter. I am in no way a HHS fan, but they are the best coached most proficient highschool team I have seen in a long time. Not only are they a great team, they are all very good athletes and anyone of the skilled players can make a big play. This team also has a lot of heart and are very confident. Heck, they have a linebacker returning punts!! In regard to the BGHS QB, I am sure he is a good kid and player, but unless he has improved a lot from last year, I don't think he can come close to Cecil. Just one mans opinion. I hope both teams have a good game and return home safe & healthy. HHS wins this one big....CCH should be back in the hunt by 2010.
  12. Let's stop and think what this game is all about and what these coaches do. First, these guys are teachers and from what I hear, darn good ones. My son thinks very highly of all of them. They also put in numerous hours and spend a tremendous amount of time away from their own kids. Maybe they didn't call the right plays or maybe the game plan did not work, but it still comes down to one simple thing...the kids still have to make the plays. Friday night things did not work out. That is life. If you feel you can do a better job. Get a teaching degree and take a low paying job, put in all the extra hours and get out there and show us your stuff! It is a game...sometimes you win and sometimes you don't, but let's not forget...these guys are good people and the players are just kids. We are the adults...let's try acting as such.
  13. I am sure Moore is a good player, but expecting the same performance against NCC as he had against Lloyd....that is comparing apples to oranges. I know most of the kids playing for HC and they are great kids and good players. Coach Koz is a good coach and a better person, but NCC is a playoff team. This is their time of year and HC does not have the personnel to match up. I wish them well. I'd love to see the game, but I will be watching the other catholic school team in the playoffs playing "that team from Fort Thomas." One thing is for sure, there will be a lot of good football being played this weekend. Good Luck!!!!
  14. Football is about heart, will, hard work, commitment, teamwork and persistence. There is nothing logical about it. Sure, there are a few questions marks, but these kids are some of the best athletes in the Northern Kentucky area and they have developed a winning tradition. Also, many of the kids that are playing this year are coming off a pretty solid JV season. I have seen a lot of the practices and both scrimmages and I think they will hold their own against anybody. They are motivated, confident, very well conditioned and well coached. Plus, the purpose of playing the Ohio teams is to get them ready for the post-season. The offense is problematic, but the defense will raise the level of play of the offense and they will be in the hunt when it counts. I guess we will have to wait and see....
  15. I haven't seen Beechwood yet...I hear they are big and have good speed. I am an old River Rat turned Cov Cath fan (wait…is that possible?) so I will always root against Beechwood. I think Beechwood will be 14-1. Anyway, my son is a sophomore at Cov Cath and I have been to the last couple of practices. They look like they are starting to come together. I know the offense looked bad against Ryle, but they have made a few adjustments to the offensive line and the offense looked much more crisp and confident today. Also, they have a lot of speed on both sides of the ball. Depending on who starts at quarterback, the skill position players all run the 40 between 4.5 or 4.7; although, it has been reported that Buckley ran a 4.3. That is flat out flying. All the O-line has to do is make a crease and he will do the rest. He is strong and runs hard. The defense is very quick to the ball and very aggressive. Even the smaller players hit hard and are not afraid to challenge the biggest running back. While I will pull for the Colonels, I am not a homer, but I think people will be surprised by this team. They are a very confident, close-knit group of kids and they have responded well to the new coaching staff. Even considering the extremely tough schedule they play, I wouldn't count them out. Only time will tell. Good luck to everyone……yes even the Tigers.
  16. You know what amazes me about this whole thing is that…no one is going out recruiting anyone. My kids have been involved in catholic education for the past 18 years. I have 2 in high school and 2 in grade school. All of my kids are involved in athletics. All of their friends are involved in athletics and the majority of them attend catholic schools. I have met many parents over the years and not one couple has been approached by a coach, athletic director or alumnus from any catholic school in the area……yes even those student whom have gone on to be standouts. The fact of the matter is that, people are not going to spend thousands of dollars to send there kids to a private school just to play a sport. Do people honestly believe that those of us who send our kids to catholic institutions care more about PATs and RBIs than we do about SATs, ACTs and the rosary? Additionally, there are no sports scholarships or stipends to entice anyone to one school over the other. There are; however, academic scholarships and incentives. There is also tuition assistance for those who cannot afford to attend a catholic school. Furthermore, many private schools, particularly the catholic schools, require dress codes, community service activities, additional educational obligations, participation in religious services and myriad other responsibilities to complete their education. Athletes are not exempt and do not receive special privileges. What parent or child would choose such an environment if their goal is sports oriented? Here’s what it comes down to…the private schools have finally realized that sports are a good thing and that they add to a child’s educational and personal development. So, they have allocated time, effort and money into developing programs that have become successful. Better coaches, better facilities, weight programs, motivated kids and involved parents. Unfortunately, some “adults”, who hold positions of power, don’t like loosing or are to lazy to improve their programs and have chosen their own wants and needs over the wants and needs of the children they are supposed represent and educate. Prop 2 is a bad idea, bad policy and a bad precedent that was promulgated by, misconceptions, petty jealousies and flat out fallacious arguments and statements. Those who have perpetrated these beliefs have done so for there own personal gain and to the detriment of the many students who will be unfairly penalized by such a ridiculous concept. Why don’t we just enforce the current rules as they stand and let the kids settle the dispute on the fields, in the pools and in the gyms? I bet we will find that the playing field is much more level than is being portrayed by some.
