  1. I thought Matt St. John from South Laurel was on the jr. team. Was he there?
  2. Don't think Hicks is going anywhere. Other than the incredible talent being brought in doesn't Scott County have a student body of nearly 2300. That's a lot of kids to pick from. For a high school BB Coach he could hardly beat his current situation even at a private school.
  3. I think part of the reason was to get the middle to open up and get the clutter of defenders out away from the basket. Get some of the big kids away from the paint and to ease up on some of the rough play around the basket. Also considering the trapizoid lane like international play for the same reasons. Personally, I think it may have the opposite effect they are hoping for. I think if you move the 3 point line back there will likely be more saging defenses and help on the inside play since you should not be able to make the 3 as easily and would not have to guard the 3 as honestly .
  4. The future looks great for the Scott County Basketball program. Not necesarily for the middle school kid who has worked his brains out through grade and middle school in order to get the opportunity to play on HIS high school basketball team. This is obviously a very talented group to win the KBA 7th Grade State Championship. I just think it's not likely you will see them get the opportunity to play for the KHSAA State Championship a few years from now.
  5. This is just a thought, but I bet if Whitakers Dad lost his job at Hazard considering the current job market in Scott Co. I would say he could find employment there quicker than a highly skilled point guard could penetrate and pitch.
  6. Sorry guys, I'm way behind on this one. I heard Coach Jones was the front-runner for the Harlan Co job but hadn't heard they had hired anyone.
  7. Coach Woods has a pretty good group of young kids coming through his Wayne progam right now and I think he would generally like his chances where he is. Even though the 12th has a lot of quality teams at the top of the heap, who would want to deal with Hazard right now in the 14th. They were runner-up in the All A to Hopson and U.H. and return everybody for the next year or two. They are also coached be Al Holland who has taken multiple teams to the state multiple times. The 13th would put him back in the position of having to annually go through Steve Wright and Roscoe Dennys' South Laurel teams that have been the most successful program in the 12th or 13th over the past several years. Why deal with that.
  8. If Woods did go to new Harlan Co. school he would get a lot of talented kids to pick from. They apparently want to get the best Coaches available and are willing to make the job attractive as evidenced by their hiring Tom Larkey from Rockcastle for their football team.
  9. You are kidding about Jones going to Monticello. He had a boys team that returns maybe the best player in the region that won 20 some games last year.
  10. I doubt Manns will give up his starting spot and don't see Wilson moving off the point. Doesn't Hounds have a couple of big young kids that will see some varsity minutes.
  11. I think you would be hard pressed to win at any level consistently with all guards just as you would if you had all big guys. Each group generally creates obvious advantages and disadvantages. I do believe however if I had to go out and put together a high school team to be competitive it sure would be a lot easier finding my quality guards for my program than finding my quality big guys. There are simply fewer big guys who can play. I believe the biggest gap that still exist between the Mid-major colleges and the D1 school is at the 4 and 5 positions. I will often see the mid-major team with point guard, shooting guard and small forward that I think would do well with a lot of D1 schools. No knock on the mid-majors but I rarely watch a game were I sit there and think to myself ya know that power forward and that post guy could fit in and play just as well as the 4 and 5 guys in the SEC, Big East or Big 10.
  12. I got to agree with you on this one. I will take this group of forwards and play Mikes' guards. I think this group of forwards size, athleticism and skill set would trump the skills and speed of Mikes' guards.
  13. I think the majority of the Bobby Keith Clay County teams who were dominating the 13th Region in the 70's and 80's had great success without the skilled 6'6" or 6'7" kids we see a lot today because they were generally playing teams in and around the 13th region who also did not have many quality post kids with skills and size. The post players they used such as Boxhead and players like him were usually very strong; could score around the basket; great at setting picks; great rebounders due to excellant checkout technique coupled with an incredibly tough physical and mental attitude. His teams were always perimeter oriented and the post players even though not the long 6'7" kids we see today were the most skilled at their positions at what they were asked to do.
  14. I think that Male team with Griffith and Turner get my vote
  15. When did UK make any type of offer(walk on or otherwise) to Stepp or Slone? Does anyone know if UK makes a kid a walk on offer does that insure the kid a spot on the team or merely a tryout? Also what position does Slone hope to play?
  16. I don't think there is one coming out of this years class. Certainly haven't seen all the high schoolers this year but I really haven't seen a player with the unusual combination of size, speed, athleticism, skill, intensity and basic understanding of the game especially on the offensive end that Beasley has. I guess we probably shouldn't expect to see one every year.
  17. The timing of that blocking call did seem odd. I am not sure if it was a block or not but it appeared as if the ref waited to see if the shot went in and when it didn't he called the foul. I think Holmes has a great half court defense because of their speed and aggressiveness. I was suprised that Miller was not doubled when he caught the ball in the post or fronted to cut down on his touches that close to the basket. But sometimes that is easier said than done. Anyway congrads to both these teams.
  18. Against Holmes it seemed every time they would get a bit of a run started Miller would step up and come through with a big basket or play, especially in the second half. I think he actually scored 19 of his 23 in the second half and appeared to score a lot of those of the block with single coverage. I wonder why Holmes did not either deny him the ball in post area by fronting or doubling the post since he scored so easily when he caught the ball in that area. O well, Just thinkin out loud. Congrats to the Royals. You had the best player and the best team at the tounament.
  19. I know you can't replace Miller but I sure like Masons chances of repeating in the 10th next year with the returning upper classmen and the younger group who I am sure will really improve over the summer. I had the oppurtunity to see the Pawset kid play at the Georgetown Bluechip camp last summer. He is a rebounding machine. I did not get the chance to see every team up there but I thought Pawset & his teammate the Sizemore kid from South Laurel were two of the best 9th graders at the camp.
  20. Haven't seen the Hood kid from Madisonville play this year. How big is he? What type player ishe ? Does he have D1 size, skill, and athleticism? Is UK and any other D1 schools offering him ?
  21. Hazard should obviously be the team to beat in the 14th since they are all back. I have seen a few of the best teams in the 14th and some of their young kids and even though there are some quality young kids I don't see anybody improving enough to overtake Hazard. Elliot has enough to be back. Don't really expect Paintsville to rebound that quickly since they will loose not only their playing core but also the Coach that has run that program for years. Corbin should be the team to beat in the 13th since they have all staters back and have a couple of big kids on freshman group that are skilled and a couple of smaller kids with good quickness. South returns three key starters, two of which are 10th graders, along with a couple of subs who played substantial minutes and a couple of freshman that should play key roles next year. Unless Coach Elam gets some real Improvement from his younger kids to help out Miller it could be a long season for Knox considering the personel their lost this year.
