Huh??? I thought this was SUPPOSED to be a HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME, about a bunch of 15-18 year old kids trying to play a game and maybe in the process learn a few things that might help them become better people later in life. Where does the consideration on the student-athlete come in? Of course, on second thought, you are 100% right. When the circus comes to town, the paying customer wants to see the main attraction, not the sideshow.

Can't answer except they didn't knock the cover off the ball against Wolfe. But was it bad hitting or good pitching? Stamper was pretty tough in this game, he really battled hard, but his control was not quite as good as it usually is. Anyway, Lee County has great pitching, and has outstanding defense, so I think they have a chance to win every time they take the field even if they don't hit the ball well.

Thomas pitched for Lee, and was outstanding, pitching a one-hitter. He had a very good fastball and a nasty curve. Stamper pitched very well for Wolfe, allowing only five hits. The Wolves hung tough the whole game. It was 2-1 going into the 7th. Wolfe made a couple of mistakes and Lee took advantage, scoring two runs, basically putting the game away. The Bobcats defense was excellent, as it usually is. Should be a very good game with Leslie tomorrow night.

There's no question that at this particular time, the move to the 55th district made it less difficult for the Wolves, but who knows, in a couple of years the balance of power may shift into the 55th. The fact that Riverside did not field a team this year made it a three team district, with the #1 seed automatically going to the region. But, even though the Wolves got the number one seed, they didn't just come in this year and steamroll over the teams in the 55th. On the other hand, their former 56th district rivals didn't exactly roll over Wolfe in the regular season, either.

I'll stand by what I said earlier, the question appears to try to minimize Wolfe's championship. This is their first in 8 years and only the 3rd in school history, if I'm not mistaken. This is a very big thing to the players. I have spoken with a few of them, and they are very offended by the put-down. Ah well, fuel for the fire.....

Not sure if you were meaning to bash the 55th or not, but I bet a lot of Wolfe players (and I'd guess, Breathitt and Jackson City players as well) are not pleased with your reply. I posted this thread to give information about a very competitive and well played championship game. The players on both teams gave their all and their efforts and accomplishments should not be degraded or minimized. This forum should be used to help build up these student-athletes, not tear them down.

Wolfe County wins 55th District Tournament with a hard fought 5-1 win over Breathitt. Stamper pitches 7 great innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out 11. Chase Nickell gets a couple of big hits for the Wolves, including a long 2 RBI double, and does a great job defensivley behind the plate. Stamper gets 3 hits to help his own cause. Chris is playing outstanding baseball right now and is certainly a franchise player. Nickell, Ryan Risner, Jonathan Sparks, and Johnny Ratliff were selected to the all-tournament team for Wolfe, while Stamper was named MVP. A very stange thing also happened during the game, something I've never seen with an aluminum baseball bat. Stamper was using a Rawlings Liquid Metal, I guess he was jammed, and the bat broke in his hands, with the barrel and the ball both landing in left field. Has anyone ever seen this happen?

A wild and crazy game that featured almost everything: lots of hits, errors, and walks. Wolfe County scored three runs in one inning on squeeze plays; I dont think I've ever seen that before. Chris Stamper went 5-5 against his old team. He is truly having a great season for Wolfe. Still, the Wolfe pitchers allowed 9 walks, hit three batters, and the defense made far too many errors. Powell was not very sharp in the field either as they committed many errors as well. Never-the-less, it was a very entertaining game with the lead changing several times between the two teams.

Chris intends to play baseball at UV-Wise. He said his basketball coach has given him the ok to do two sports, and the baseball coach is going to look at him during the district and regional tournaments. I hope Chris does try to play baseball; he is an outstanding player and is having a monster of a senior season at Wolfe County.

Wolfe scores two in the bottom of the 7th to win in a well-played game by both teams. Stamper and Smith each pitched well for their respective teams. Freshman Chris Smith hit his first homer for the Wolves, a two run shot in the 6th, while Nickell and Ratliff each drove in a pair for Wolfe.

Sparky was clocked last winter in the low 70's. I'd day he is thowing a little harder than that at this point. He is certainly not overpowering, but the lefty can cause problems for hitters if he throws strikes. His fastball has a lot of movement on it, and if he has control of his curveball can be a very effective pitcher.

I'd really like to acknowlege the great effort by the Tigers; they fought hard in both games against Wolfe to the end. The home runs by Clemons and Thompson were huge, Chase's two run shot in the fifth inning made it a 6-3 game and really gave the Wolves a scare. The Hayes kid pitched a great game and I think he has a good future ahead of him. Jackson has the potential to cause some real problems in the 55th District Tournament.

Wolfe clinches #1 seed in 55th District with hard fought win. Sparks pitches a great game, going the distance. "Sparky" gave up 3 earned runs on 4 hits, striking out 6. Chris Stamper and Chase Nickel each hit solo homers, with Nickel, Johnny Ratliff, and Dustin Drake all getting 3 hits apiece.

During the basketball season Stamper would throw off on indoor mound in the gym a couple of days a week. He was clocked consistently with a radar gun in the upper 70's. His arm should be a lot stronger by now. I'd say he is not having any problem hitting the low 80's. I think he threw the ball harder against Jackson City than he did at Owsley. He really popped a few in there that had the catcher shaking his hand.

Actually, with all the rainouts and other cancellations this spring, Stamper has only pitched 30 innings so far. His pitch count was 57 against Owsley and 96 against Jackson City this week. Of course, it depends on the pitcher, but 150 pitches in 7 day week is not abnormally high, but that probably pushes the upper limits as to what a pitcher should throw. Chris is a good kid and lets the coaches know when he's had enough, so I'd say the chances of him getting arm problems are low.

Great win for the visiting team. Wolfe overcame a shaky 3rd inning defensively when Knott score 5 runs. Wolfe brought the lumber out tonight; Stamper led the way with a homer and another shot off the center field fence. Chris had 7 RBI's tonight. Sophomore Chase Nickel hit his first varsity homer, a two run shot to left, and finished with 4 RBI's. Chase also had a great game defensively behind the plate. Warren Oliver pitched nice game for Wolfe, getting his first ever 7 inning complete game. A very nice over-all team effort by the Wolves.

Actually, Stamper would be elgible to pitch 4 innings on Sunday-bad math on my part!

The KHSAA has the following rules regarding individual pitchers: 1. No more than 15 innings over a 7 day period. 2. 9 innings limit in one day 3. 3-5 innings pitched, mandatory one day rest 4. 6 innings pitched, mandatory two day rest. 5. 7 -9 innings pitched, 3 days rest. All mandatory rest days begin the following day after the pitcher threw. One pitch equals an inning pitched. Stamper pitched 4 innings Monday against Owsley, so he was elgible to throw today against Jackson City. He would not be elgible to pitch again until Sunday at the earliest, and then could only pitch 2 innings because of the 15 inning/7 day rule.

I know where you're coming from, but Neeley looked like someone who had pitched many years out there tonight. He didnt throw the ball very hard, but did change speeds well and had good control of his pitches. I thought he had Wolfe County off balance all night.

Owsley hit the ball very well tonight, which was not surprising, but I was impressed with their pitching and defense. They shut down most of the Wolve's hitters, but a couple had outstanding nights. Chris Stamper went 3-3 and a walk, with all three hits being laser shots to different fields, just did not get a ball in the air high enough to go yard. Johnny Ratliff had a great game for Wolfe tonight, going 3-4 with 5 RBI's. Ratliff got hurt in a collision at 3rd base and missed most of the season last year, and is making a great comeback. He seems to be playing with a lot of confidence and could be a very important player come tournament time.

Neeley was a crafty lefty out there tonight-caused a lot of problems for the Wolfe hitters, especially the younger players. Bowling wore the Wolves out tonite with a grand slam and I think 6 RBI's.(He hit a grand slam and a 3 run homer in two games against Wolfe last year). Wolfe County was missing two infielder starters, which hurt them on both offense and defense. Still, it was an entertaining game, a lot of runs scored and Wolfe had the bases loaded in the 7th, but couldnt come back. Good win for the Owls.

I understand where you are coming from, but the fact that basketball and football's regular seasons last 3 months, compared to baseball's season only lasting 7 weeks, I'd say that we should have the tests then and cancel all games during that week; those sports can afford to lose one week during the regular season more than baseball can!

Wolfe County has three games scheduled next week and I'll not be surprised if at LEAST one of them is cancelled because of the tests. I don't mean to minimize the importance of the tests, but would like to understand the reasoning behind cancelling school events because of the tests. Are the tests so hard that the students will be too tired to do anything after school,or do school officials think the students are going to go home and study until bedtime for the tests the next day??? I think baseball games would be a welcome break from all day testing for the students, but I guess that is only my opinion. I could understand not going on long road trips during testing week, but cancelling games and other events make no sense to me.
