Mason Co.'s freshman boys were beaten by Clark Co. 48-47 on Wednesday on a last second shot by Bopper Stenzel. Mason's record falls to 3-2. Josh Harris led Mason Co. with 25 points. Richie Farmer, King Kelly Coleman and Darrell Griffith are probably the best high school basketball players ever in this state. But if you want the best basketball player ever to come out of this state it has to be Wes Unseld. High school and college star and one of the 50 best all-time NBA Hall of Famers. Wes is the best ever to come out of this state. It was just a shame he didn't play for the Big Blue.

I remember a player from Cov.Cath. back in the late 60's, John VonLehman, dropped 40 some points on Lyons and company at the Fieldhouse and went on to a nice career at the University of Dayton. Thought he might be one of the best to come out of there.

What about Butch Beard at Breckenridge County, I believe he was a pretty good player. Also, Clem Haskins wasn't too bad either. Can't remember where he went to high school.

Old Maysville High School: George Cooke, ??? Calvert (Can't think of his first name) and I believe he played at UK, Darrell Hill, Fred Walker, James Smith, Mark Turner, Paul King, Cere Myrick, Steve Chambers, and a few others from the 80's until the merger whom I can't remember their names.

Haven't seen anyone on here representing the Saints from St. Pat. so how about Fanny Stahl, Tim Purdon, and Jay Gast.

For Mason Co.: Ronnie Lyons, Chris Lofton, Deron Feldhaus and Darius Miller, not in any particular order, put them where you want. The big difference between Ronnie and Chris other than Regional and State Championships, was the 3 point line or lack there of, and the style of play and their coaches style. I'll take Kelly Wells and Mark Starns over Jim Mitchell anyday. Mitchell's substitute patterns resembled a chineese fire drill at times and hurt the team somewhat. Chris would not have come close to Ronnie in scoring if the 3 point line was in effect back in his day and it would have been an awesome match-up to see Lyons & Co. play the 2003 Lofton State Champs.

Maybe you or someone else can help out here, wasn't there a time when the 39th District had 6 schools in it, back in the 70's. Mason Co., Maysville, St. Patrick, Tollesboro, Fleming Co. and ??? (Augusta or Deming or Lewis Co.). This may have been before girls sports started in 75-76. Maysville and Tollesboro and MMI closing and Fleming Co. and Bath Co. being moved some years ago have hurt the Districts and Region, but you can't do anything about schools having to close, just a part of life.
