  1. I have tripped over my wording too much, I would like to focus on this segment of what I was trying to get across.
  2. I am not a "true Republican" but I do not know how to address your post.
  3. My wording was very, very poor. What I did not mean to imply was that poor people want a handout necessarily; but rather, if you were being given one, why would you vote against it? As for the poor people aren't as educated, I guess that is a generalization, but I'd say that a good percentage of people in poverty have low levels of education. And I agree, I should not have used him in my experiment. I wasn't trying to, he got me started on all the topics (immigration, drilling for oil, and taxes) and I just summed it up at the end (very vaguely).
  4. We conservatives are so disheartened that we have to vote for Senator McCain, even if he is a heroic American.
  5. :thumb: Agreed. And I will try and limit the name-calling. :jump::jump: Seriously, though, I have changed quite a few of my positions. For example, the argument about banning smoking in restaurants. I never thought about it, but I initial thought was that it was a good thing. After reading the thread (specifically HHSDad's and Hearsay's argument, I think) I changed my mind completely. And those in which I do not change my position, from seeing the other side I become stronger in my beliefs.
  6. If you are specifically looking for them, which in all likelihood you are (considering you are of the belief that a large majority of people are racist). I don't notice them at all.
  7. Market can't correct itself with limitations on it. It is not a free market. First of all, you tell me exactly what he could have and should have done. Second of all, tell me where in the constitution he is granted those privileges.
  8. Which brings up another interesting thing I thought of. First of all, I don't like only focusing on social issues while voting. But, let's be honest here, a lot of poor people are uneducated. They simply won't (or can't) understand some complicated economics. And if a person believes that there beliefs (in this case, I mean conservative economic policies) are better for the poor, is it really that wrong to focus on social issues, because you can convince them in that regard? I know it is misleading, and can be obviously dishonest, but is it wrong?
  9. That's not true. One of the most important things that a President can do is appoint conservative judges.
  10. I can't speak for everyone of course, but every job I have had thusfar I have been working with people who are definently in need of money, not sure if on welfare or not. I worked side by side with a single mother of two kids, who told me how badly she needed the hours and to be full time because she had been laid off her previous job. Plenty people said they needed the hours. Of the 25 or so of us, though, when our manager would say we could leave 2 hours early, about 3 of us would stay. I am not trying to base my thoughts on all poor people on this, but it has an effect on me. Good point. My wording was vague. But the point of my post is that, if you were in poverty, why wouldn't you vote Democrat? And how do we (speaking of conservatives) convince poor people to vote for them? Because I honestly believe that economic ideas that are promoted as conservative are better for the poor, just the effects are more indirect.

  12. My post was not intended to upset you, I was more speaking towards how do you convince someone who is getting money from the government to vote for the party that wants to reduce government. And my wording was poor, but my friend does not like the illegals who are working here currently to have to leave. To be honest, I am unsure if he specifically is receiving government assistance, I did not ask him.
  13. As we all, the top 50% of income earners in America pay 96% of the (income) taxes in this country. I have a friend of mine that I drive to work who is surely in the bottom 50%. I was asking him about his political affiliation (he is very uninformed about politics) and he said he didn't really know what either side stands for. From other conversations with him, I gathered some information. I asked him these questions: Do you hate immigrants coming to this country and taking money back to their home country (Mexico)? Do believe that we should drill for oil in America? Do you hate high taxes? All 3 questions he responded yes. I told him he was a conservative. But the final question got me thinking (as well as reading Leave Us Alone). If you were poor, why wouldn't you vote for the Democrats? Knowing about economics, I understand that lower taxes (even though less entitlement programs) helps the poor more than those programs because of long-term economic growth, lower unemployment, more investment projects, entrepreneur opportunities, etc., and just raises the overall standard of life. But if you were (or are) in that bottom 50%, why would you vote against free money? How do you get a poor person, who is getting handouts from the government, to switch sides?
  14. I met him once, a nice man. This is sad.
  15. On the topic of Bush's qualifications, he and Bill Clinton had similar qualifications, except that Bush was governor of a bigger state. Both of whom are at least as qualified as Senator Obama. HHSDad brought up a good point that maybe it is better to be a governor then President rather than a Senator, although I do like a candidate who has been in DC.
  16. We could use a pitcher or SS or Catcher a lot more IMO
  17. 1. He wants a lot of money 2. He plays a position where we actually have a good, young player (Votto) 3. He was the 3rd ranked 1st basemen
  18. GT, did you say he may be an outfielder eventually?
  19. Same for me. :thumb: Agreed. I had no interest in Politics before I ventured to P&R, but it has sparked a bigtime interest for me.
  20. As a Republican, which type of change do you like? Higher taxes? Keeping the net amount of American jobs low? Bigger government in general?
